scientific name

Inga vera Willd.
status

Mimosa inga Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 1: 516. 1753.

“Habitat in Brasilia, Jamaica, Surinamo.” RCN: 7650.

Lectotype (Bässler in Gleditschia 20: 12, Abb. 4. 1992): [icon] “Arbor siliquosa brasiliensis, foliis pinnatis, costa media membranulis utrinque extantibus alata ” in Sloane, Voy. Jamaica 2: 58, t. 183, f. 1. 1725. – Typotype: Herb. Sloane 6: 51 (BM-SL).

Current name: Inga vera Willd. ( Fabaceae : Mimosoideae ).

Note: Although Leon (in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 53: 335, 337. 1966) discussed the Sloane plate and material, no formal typification was published. Hoc (in Darwiniana 30: 241. 1991 [1990]) indicated Plumier, Nov. Pl. Genera: 13, t. 19. 1703. as “tipo” for Inga Mill. , with M. inga and I. vera Willd. as heterotypic synonyms. However, Plumier’s plate is not cited in the protologue of M. inga , so this statement cannot be interpreted as a typification for this name.
