Apiomerus evanidus Distant, 1903 View in CoL

( Figs. 4–8 View FIGURES 1 – 8. 1 – 2 )

Discussion: Apiomerus evanidus was described as having the following color pattern: body black with the pronotum, anterior coxae and femora, and prosternum purplish red, basal margin of pronotum black, and in some specimens with the anterior femora black ( Distant 1903). Costa Lima et al. (1951) recognized a further variation of this species in which the main color is red, with black head and tibiae, with basal areas of the tibiae red.

In the specimens examined the females ( Figs. 4–5 View FIGURES 1 – 8. 1 – 2 ) fit the original description and the variation recognized by Costa Lima et al. (1951), but one male is bright orange instead of red ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 8. 1 – 2 ). The brighter specimens are from Diamantino ( Figs. 4, 6 View FIGURES 1 – 8. 1 – 2 ), while the other couple is from Cáceres ( Figs. 5, 7 View FIGURES 1 – 8. 1 – 2 ), both in Mato Grosso state. The external aspect of the genital segments agrees with the previous description of Costa Lima et al. (1951) ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1 – 8. 1 – 2 , A–B), and the male genitalia, including the aedeagus, of the two males are identical, evidencing the color variability of this species.

Specimen examined: BRAZIL, 1 female, 1 male, Mato Grosso, Cáceres, XI-1984, C. Elias leg.; 1 female, 1 male, Diamantino, Alto Rio Arinos [14° 25´S – 56° 29´W], 28-X-2002, 29-X-2003, E. Furtado leg. [MNRJ].
