scientific name

Phyllobolus splendens (L.) Gerbaulet subsp. splendens
status

Mesembryanthemum splendens Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 1: 486. 1753.

“Habitat ad Cap. b. Spei.” RCN: 3673.

Lectotype (designated here by Hartmann): [icon] “ Mesembryanthemum foliis confertis splendentibus, flore pallido” in Dillenius, Hort. Eltham. 2: 270, t. 204, f. 260. 1732.

Current name: Phyllobolus splendens (L.) Gerbaulet subsp. splendens ( Aizoaceae ).

Note: Gerbaulet (in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 119: 189. 1997) stated “Holotype: Hort. cliff. 220 (OXF; partly K!); Drawing: Dill, Hort. Eltham. 270 t. 204 f. 260”, and (in Hartmann, Ill. Handb. Succ. Pl., Aizoaceae F–Z: 214. 2001) indicated as type “Hort. Cliff. 220 (OXF, isotype K!)”. There does not appear to be any relevant Clifford material at either OXF or K. Any material connected with the Hortus Elthamensis account would not have been seen by Linnaeus and so will not be original material for the name.
