Diagnostic characters. This species is similar to P. rufiventris ( Meigen 1830) in most of characters, but can be separated by having the inferior volsella more triangular and not protruding very much medially ( Rossaro 1990). The humeral pit is not very evident ( Edwards 1929, Cranston & Oliver 1988).

Additions to description. Measurements of the Chinese specimens: Total length 2.7–4.1, 3.2 mm. Wing length 1.6–2.4, 2.1 mm. Total length/ wing length 1.4–1.7, 1.5. Wing length/ length of profemur 2.5–3.2, 2.7. AR 0.77–1.2, 0.92. Temporal setae 6–10. Clypeus with 10–14, 12 setae. Tentorium 135–175, 154 µm long; 38–50, 42 µm wide. Stipes 150–170, 162 µm long, 8–10, 9 µm wide. Palpomere 5/ 3 1.4–2.0, 1.7. Dorsocentrals 15–20, 18 setae, prealars 3. Scutellum with 4–6, 5 setae. Squama with 8–12, 10 setae. Sensilla chaetica 8–10, 9 on Ta1 of P3. Laterosternite IX with 6–8, 7 long setae. Phallapodeme 60–70, 64 µm long, transverse sternapodeme 105–115, 110 µm long, with oral projections. Gonocoxite 190–230, 215 µm long. Inferior volsella approximately triangular. Gonostylus 70–95, 83 µm long, with crista dorsalis. Megaseta 13–15, 14 µm long. HR 2.2–2.7, 2.5; HV 3.1–4.4, 3.6.

Distribution. The species has a Holarctic distribution. The Chinese specimens were collected in the Ningxia and Xinjiang Autonomous Regions and in Jilin Province (Palaearctic China); Tibet Autonomous Region, Shaanxi (Ankang County) and Sichuan Provinces (Oriental China). This is the first record from Oriental China.

Remarks. The inferior volsella varies between localities ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 A–F).
