A number of sibling species closely resemble this species and are likely to be confused as pinned specimens. The species are primarily distinguished on the basis of details of the hypopygium. The subsequently described M. ashmolei (see above) is a member of this complex, with the most recent addition being from Aldabra (Disney 2007). It is possible, therefore, that the previous records of M. verralli from the Canary Islands are misidentifications of M. ashmolei .
