Etymology. The name is related to the Amazon Forest biome where the species was found.
Distribution. Brazil: Amazonas, Pará
Type material. Holotype: ♂ BRAZIL, Amazonas, Manaus, 06/77, E. Castollón ( INPA).
Paratypes: BRAZIL, Pará, Almerim, São Raimundo, 26/IX/1980, Coll. Everardo Vogel (10♀, USNM). BRAZIL, Pará, Almerim, São Raimundo, 31/IX/1980, Coll. Everardo Vogel (2♀, USNM)
Description. (Fig. 3 A) Body surface densely punctured, dorsal color brown; head longer than wide. Antennal segment IV not compressed dorsoventrally and lacking dorsal groove. Proportion of antennal segments: I>II<III>IV<V. Rostrum reaching the base of abdomen. Proportion of rostral segments: I<II>III>IV. Pronotum strongly declivous anterior to humeral angles; projections near anterolateral angles subapically projected as small spine. Anterolateral margins not emarginate. Humeral angles rounded slightly projected, laterally emarginate. Cicatrices of pronotum slightly tumid, clearly delimited by punctures, pale callus at inner angles of cicatrices. Trocanthers and basal half of femora light brown, apex of femora and tibiae dark brown to black, punctured. Conspicuous yellowish spot at apex of radial vein. Ventrally black with broad, light brown lateral bands of thorax and abdomen with black punctures. Posterolateral angles of connexivum rounded.
FIGURE 3. Glyphepomis amazonica sp. nov. A: male, dorsal. B–E: pygophore, B, C: dorsal, D: ventral, E: posterior (cp: conical projection; dr: dorsal rim; ilvr: inferior layer of ventral rim; slvr: superior layer of ventral rim; X: segment X). Scale bars: A = 1.0 mm, B–E = 0.5 mm.
FIGURE 5. Phallus in dorsal, ventral and lateral view. A–C: Glyphepomis dubia sp. nov.; D–F: G. amazonica sp. nov.; G–I: G. magnocephala sp. nov. (mpp: movable processes of phalotheca; pc: process of conjuntiva; ph: phalotheca; v: vesica; vpp: ventral projection of phalotheca). Scale bar: 0.5 mm.
Male genitalia. (Figs. 3 B–E; 5 D–F) Pygophore trapezoidal. Posterolateral angles slightly projected, rounded. Superior layer of ventral rim bearing slightly sinuous carina; conical projections short, dorsally projected, with a tubercle laterally projected on the outer side edge; apex of conical projections falcate in dorsal view. Median triangular projection at inferior layer. Dorsal layer light brown presenting darker rim. Segment X laterally compressed, forming 1+1 longitudinal carina; apex dorsally projected. Phallus. Ventral movable processes of phalotheca with laterally compressed apex. Dorsolateral projection of conjunctiva bifurcated: internal projection dorsally curved, striated and acute, surpassing the posterior limit of vesica; external projection rounded at apex.
Female genitalia. ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 B, 7C) Posterior margin of gonocoxites 8 slightly sinuous, not covering the base of gonocoxites 9. Laterotergites 8 rounded at apex, not surpassing posteriorly the laterotergites 9. Posterior margin of gonocoxites 9 concave. Laterotergites 9 slightly excavated at the meadle of their surface. Gonocoxites 9 trapezoidal, wider than long, posterior margin concave. Laterotergites 9 rhombus at apex; exceeding the band that unites laterotergites 8 dorsally. Lateral projections of laterotergites 9 short, reaching midline of secondary thickenings of gonapophyses 9. Ring sclerites circular; 1+1 secondary thickenings of the gonapophyses 9 subtriangular, adjacent to ring sclerites. Ductus receptaculi proximalis straight. Inner tube of vesicular area circumvoluted. Ductus receptaculi distalis coiled. Anterior annular flange conspicuous, anteriorly directed; pars intermedialis constricted basally, wider near posterior annular flange, constricted distally; posterior annular flange transversal to duct; capsula seminalis hemispherical, lacking processes.
Comments. Glyphepomis amazonica is similar to G. pelotensis for sharing the shape of segment X and the inferior layer of pygophore acutely projected. The two species can be distinguished by the shape of the ventral movable processes of phalotheca, and the shape of the dorsolateral processes of conjunctiva. The anterolateral margin of pronotum in G. pelotensis is emarginate in all its extension, whereas not emarginate in G. amazonica . The new species presents the antennal segment IV cylindrical.
