3. Calleida discoidalis View in CoL species group
Diagnostic characters: With the character states of Asiatic Calleida (in the widest sense, see above), restricted as follows: abdominal sternum VII with four or more setae in males (two or more on each side), six or more setae in females (three or more on each side); sternum VII notched in males ( figs. 2, 5 View FIGURES 1–18 ); endophallus with two short copulatory pieces.
Taxonomic note: Two already described species, C. discoidalis Heller and C. fukiensis Jedlička , are attributed to this group, and several new species will be described in our next contribution (Shi & Casale, submitted). Species of this group are distributed in China, Laos, Vietnam and Philippines.
This species group is very probably not monophyletic, and relationships amongst species are unclear. In species of this group the only similarity is the presence of two short copulatory pieces in endophallus, a character common with many Asiatic, African and Madagascan Calleida species. The group is so far defined by one only external morphological feature (abdominal sternum VII multisetose), which could be demonstrated as not synapomorphic in the Asiatic species: in fact, this character is also present in Calleida species of several different groups in Africa, Madagascar and the Neotropical Region.
Nevertheless, at moment the multiple setation of the abdominal sternum VII is a valid diagnostic feature able to isolate this “group of convenience” from all other species of Asia (except the puncticollis species group, treated before).
