Alsophila canelensis Rosenstock (1909: 290) View in CoL . Cyathea canelensis (Rosenst.) Domin (1929a: 263) View in CoL . Type:— ECUADOR. Pastaza (?): Canelos, “In Andibus Ecuadoriensibus, 1857–1859,” R. Spruce 5427 (lectotype P-00631800!, here deisgnated, isolectotypes BM-000777034!/-000937683!, MPU-015185!, S-06-1042!/-06-1043!, W-0053348!/-Rchb. 1889-0200470!).
Distribution and habitat: — Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia at 1100–2750(–3100) m in humid mountain forests.
Remarks: —The type of Alsophila canelensis has relatively long hairs on the lamina, which is more reminiscent of Cyathea tryonorum or C. trichiata , but the petiole is described as glabrous, which fits more C. conjugata . Despite being named after the lowland town of Canelos (Prov. Pastaza), the specimen was probably collected at higher elevations, as as Spruce wrote in his notebook “monta[ña] Canelos, Río Verde”, which lies in the Pastaza valley on the way to the town of Baños on the slopes of volcán Tungurahua (Prov. Tungurahua); also some specimens have “Tunguagua” added in brackets on the labels.
