Cassia obtusifolia Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 1: 377. 1753 View Cited Treatment .
"Habitat in Cuba." RCN: 2964.
Lectotype (Brenan in Kew Bull. 13: 251. 1958): [icon] " Cassia foetida , foliis Sennae Italicae" in Dillenius, Hort. Eltham. 1: 71, t. 62, f. 72. 1732. - Typotype: Herb. Sherard No. 831 ( OXF; iso- G) .
Current name: Senna obtusifolia (L.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby View in CoL ( Fabaceae : Caesalpinioideae ).
Note: Prain (in J. Asiatic Soc. Bengal 66(2): 475. 1897) felt (wrongly) that the cited Dillenius plate could not be the type, and de Wit (in Webbia 11: 251. 1956) chose 528.11 (LINN), a sterile specimen of doubtful identity, as a neotype. Brenan argued that this material conflicts with the diagnosis, and rejected de Wit’s choice in favour of the Dillenius plate. However, Reveal (in Taxon 41: 138. 1992) proposed the name, and the type accepted by Brenan and others, for conservation. The Committee for Spermatophyta (in Taxon 43: 273. 1994) did not recommend this, accepting Brenan’s choice of type as valid. Conservation was therefore felt to be unnecessary.
