DIAGNOSIS (male): Holoptic, thorax short and compact, abdomen long, cylindrical; wing long, linear, very slender, apex narrow. Veins R 5 and stem of R 4+5 straight, tip of R 5 ending at apex of wing; R 4, R 5, M 1, and M 2 almost parallel; crossvein sc-r present. Cells br and bm equal length; cell d very long, short spur of M 3 present; cell cup closed; anal lobe and A 2 well developed; upper calypter small, with inflated bulla. Proboscis short; antenna with stylate flagellum, 4 flagellar articles, basal flagellomere drop shaped, others forming slender stylus; fine terminal style present. Mesocoxa with one spur; metacoxa with well-developed peg. Gonocoxa small; phallus with long (parameral?) sheath.
TYPE SPECIES: Endymiomyia quadra , new species.
ETYMOLOGY: Derived from Endymion of Greek mythology, a youth so beautiful that Selene, the moon, purportedly cast him into perpetual sleep so that she could lie with him; and myia, Greek for “fly.” In reference to the gender, lovely preservation, and age of the holotype. The gender of the name is feminine.
