Cortaderia roraimensis ( Brown 1901: 74) Pilger (1914: 112) View in CoL . ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 )
Basionym: Arundo roraimensis Brown (1901: 74) View in CoL First-step lectotype:— GUYANA. Mount Roraima, 1898, McConnell & Quelch 673 (K), designated by Connor & Edgar (1974: 601),
corrected from “ holotype ”. Second-step lectotype: K-000709640!, here designated. Isolectotypes: K-000709639!, K-000709641!,
US-78867! (fragm. ex K-000709640), US-1039475!, FR-0031327! (fragm. ex K-000709640).
According to McNeill (2014), in situations, prior to 1958, in which a single gathering (but not a single specimen) is indicated in the protologue as the basis of a new taxon but without the word “type”, it can only be considered a holotype if it were made clear that the author used no other element and if the gathering were represented by a single specimen. This is not the case for Arundo roraimensis , as there are several specimens of the collection McConnell & Quelch 673 and it cannot be established that the author used only one of them. According to Art. 40, Note 1, of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012), the specimens that comprise the gathering are syntypes.
The statement by Connor & Edgar (1974) that the “ holotype ” is housed at K can be accepted as a first-step lectotypification for that name, under Art. 9.9 and 9.17 of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012). As we found three specimens at K labeled as McConnell & Quelch 673, we perform here the second-step lectotypification for that name, in accordance with Art. 9.17 of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012). We chose the sheet K-000709640 as the lectotype because it is the only one from this gathering housed at K with an identification note by H.E. Connor and E. Edgar, and because the fragments available in other herbaria (FR and US) were taken from this specimen. The other two specimens at K and the three from the same collection found at FR and US are all isolectotypes. The plants from the gathering McConnell & Quelch 673 are entirely pistillate.
