scientific name

Gazania rigens (L.) Gaertn.
status

Gorteria rigens (Linnaeus) Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum, ed. 2, 2: 1284. 1763.

"Habitat ad Cap. b. spei." RCN: 6572.

Basionym: Othonna rigens L. (1760) .

Lectotype (Roessler in Mitt. Bot. Staatssamml. München 3: 371. 1959): Schreber, Herb. Linn. No. 1027.3 ( LINN) .

Current name: Gazania rigens (L.) Gaertn. View in CoL ( Asteraceae ).

Note: Wijnands (Bot. Commelins: 84. 1981) argued that the typification by Roessler should be rejected because the thesis in which Othonna rigens was published was based largely on specimens lent to Linnaeus by Burman. While this is generally true, 1027.3 (LINN, above) is annotated as Othonna rigens by Linnaeus, and appears to be original material for both that name and Gorteria rigens (L.) L. (1763) . Roessler’s typification is accepted here.
