Annual herb with caducous leaves. Flowers bisexual, sometimes staminate, solitary or 2-3 in clusters, these in panicles; perianth lobes 5, connate up to the middle; fruiting perianth winged, enclosing the fruit; stamens 5; ovary covered by a fleece of hairs; stigmas 2. Pericarp membranous, free; seeds horizontal; embryo annular; radicle centrifugal. 2/1 =36. One sp., C. atriplicifolium (Sprengel) J.Coulter , W and C N America, adventive in Europe and S America.
