Costa Rica • Puntarenas Province, Karen Mogensen Wildlife Refuge ; 09°52'33"N, 085°03'12"W; 397 m alt.; 20.04.2019; direct observation GoogleMaps .

Identification.

Medium-sized rodent with a black body and a pale-yellow head. Most of the hairs conceal yellowish spines, which are shorter and scarce underside. The head and ears are small, the nose is large and pink. The tail – thicker at the base – is prehensile, a unique feature among the Costa Rican rodents ( Hernández-Hernández and Chávez 2021; Reid and Gόmez Zamora 2022). Rare in the investigated area. Recorded in transitional forest habitats.
