Notropis ariommus (Cope 1867)

Distribution

Big Oaks NWR: 1, 11, 20

The collection of popeye shiner represent the first record for this species in Indiana since the species was originally described from the White River near Indianapolis in the late 1800's. During this study specimens were collected from Otter Creek, Big Graham Creek, and Big Creek (Table 5).

Ecology

The species was collected from moderate sized flowing rivers over cobble and gravel substrates.

Conservation

The species has been considered extirpated within Indiana, but with these records should be considered for additional study to determine the species current status.
