Chonocephalus wirthorum Disney, 1980: 363 (1 male only). Misidentification. The recognition of this species from its description alone has caused problems. Examination of the holotype reveals that Borgmeier overlooked the shorter left lobe of the hypandrium and labelled the right gonopod as the right lobe instead.

Material. Holotype male, Panama, Barro Colorado Island, July 1942, at flower of Anthurium denudatum ( Araceae ) (Zetez No. 4982, USNM). 14 males, Colombia, Rio Raposo, July , August , December 1963, January , April , June , July 1964, V. H. Lee; 1 male, Turbo , Rio Leon , May 1964, C. J. Marinkelle ( USNM). 1 male, Costa Rica, Limon Prov., nr Siquirres , Finca La Lola , 10 o 06’N, 83 o W, 16 July 1982, A. M. Young ( USNM). 3 males, Ecuador, Rio Palenque , carrion trap, 25 February 1979, S. A. Marshall ( DEBU, CUMZ). 1 male, Panama, Gamboa, C. Z., Pipeline Road, reared from rotting spadix of Carludovica palmata , July 1967, W & M. Wirth ( CUMZ, 4-150).

Natural history. The holotype and 16 male paratypes were caught at flowers of Anthurium denudatum ( Araceae ) ( Borgmeier, 1967). It has been reared from the rotting spadix of Carludovica palmata Ruíz & Pavón ( Cyclanthaceae ).
