Notes
Species complex. The taxonomy of the species is confused, with a long list of synonyms. Originally described from the Northern Adriatic but reported from worldwide locations ( Martín et al. 2003), with three different morphotypes in the Western Mediterranean. Currently, three well-described species of Haplosyllis are known the Mediterranean: Haplosyllis spongicola , Haplosyllis chamaeleon Laubier, 1960 and Haplosyllis granulosa (Lattig, San Martín & Martin, 2007). The description of Haplosyllis spongicola by San Martín (2003) is referred in part to Haplosyllis granulosa ( Lattig et al. 2007). In addition, a number of Haplosyllis species have been described from the Mediterranean and the Black Sea which are currently regarded as incertae sedis due to lost type material and insufficient descriptions ( Lattig and Martín 2009). Eastern Mediterranean records should also be examined for possible occurrences of the Red Sea species Haplosyllis djiboutiensis Gravier, 1900.
