Dodomeira forbicionii Bellò View in CoL & Baviera sp. n.
( Figures 6, 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d, 6e, 6f View FIGURES 6 – 6 , 40f View FIGURES 40 , 65 View FIGURES 60 – 98 , 104 View FIGURES 99 – 137 )
Type locality. Sicily, Enna, Erei, Nissoria (Fig. 147).
Diagnosis. A small-size species (3.50– 3.50 mm) belonging to the adrianae group with short sub-parallel elytra (length: 2.25–2.25, width: 1.40–1.40, ratio: 1.60–1.60) and body shape sub-cylindrical. Within the species group, it is recognisable by mesorostrum with clavate setae, pronotum more transverse (length: 0.75, width: 0.90, ratio 0.83) and elytral declivity with raised setae (30°–45°). Elytra slightly convex dorsally, clothed by imbricate golden silvery scales and golden setae clavate.
Type series. Holotype female with the following labels: [transparent label] genitalia in DHMF // [white, printed] ♀ // [white, printed] “I, Sicilia, Enna, Nissoria, 645m, vaglio Olea , 27. IX. 2015, 37°39.471’ 014°27.342’, legg. Bellò & Baviera ”// [green, printed] “Collezione Cesare Bellò” // [red, printed] “ Dodomeira forbicionii sp. n., Holotype, det. Bellò 2016 ” ( CBE).
Paratype. 1 female: “I, Sicilia, Enna, Nissoria, 645m, vaglio Olea , 17. III. 2016 ”, 37°39.471’ 014°27.342’, Bellò & Chemello legg.”( CBE). Types are two (all females).
Holotype. Female. Total length: 3.50 mm. Body shape slender and subcylindrical. Dorsal vestiture with imbricate silvery-golden scales with metallic sheen. Short, raised or semi-erect, clavate setae on pronotum as on elytra (angle with elytral surface 45°–75°).
Rostrum covered by golden silvery scales, transverse (length/width ratio 0.66), sub-parallel to the sides. Pterygia obvious. Epistome absent. Mesorostrum slightly concave, anteriorly with about ten thin, curved, semierect setae. Vertex wide and convex (vertex width / mesorostrum width: ratio 2.00) with clavate (rarely spatulate) setae. Interocular space without visible fovea. Lateral and spherical eyes slightly protruding from outline of head. Antenna robust and quite short with long, raised, silvery, widened setae. Antenna with ratio 0.75 (scape length: 0.75 mm, funicle length: 1.00 mm). Scape clubbed, slightly more robust than funicle, curved at the middle. Funicle segments including club, relative lengths as follows: 9.5.4.3.3.3.3.15; segments 1–4 with clavate and 5–7 widened setae; segments 4–7 pearl-shaped. Club at least twice wider than funicle, fusiform with suture between first and second segment visible.
Pronotum clothed with golden silvery scales, transverse (length: 0.75 mm, width: 0.90 mm, ratio: 0.83), slightly sub-hexagonal, sinuate at the sides, wider in the middle with clavate, golden silvery recumbent setae. Punctation usually covered by scales. Scutellum not visible.
Elytra convex, covered by golden silvery scales, cylindrical, with suture quite flat (length: 2.25 mm, width: 1.40 mm, ratio: 1.60), wider at the middle. Humeri short and rounded. Elytral declivity with raised setae (30°–45°). Punctation of striae, shallow, catenulate and impressed; Punctation regular. Interstriae as wide as striae, flat, with clavate, golden silvery, raised or semi-erect setae.
Legs short and robust covered by silvery-golden scales and rather short, clavate, silvery-golden setae. Femora clubbed. Protibia with two-three acute spines on inner edge, with evident mucro on inner apical angle. Protibia not sinuous on inner edge, metatibia and mesotibia straight in side view.
Tarsal segment 1 short, conical; segment 2 short and transverse; segment 3 shallowly bilobed; all segments with thin golden setae. Onychium curved, robust and short.
Female genitalia. See Figures: spermatheca ( Fig. 65 View FIGURES 60 – 98 ), sternite VIII ( Fig. 104 View FIGURES 99 – 137 ). Genitalia were examined in all specimens.
Paratype variability. Paratype (female) is similar to the holotype.
Distribution. See Fig. 139. Italian endemic. Known around Nissoria, at 600–700 meters.
Etymology. This species named after our friend and colleague Forbicioni (Leonardo), naturalist researcher of the Tuscan archipelago and weevils specialist, in appreciation of cooperation in this work.
Ecology and Phenology. Collected by Berlese and Winkler extractors from soil obtained sifting the leaf litter on clay soil, of an olive grove in March and November, at 600–700 meters.
Collections in the other months gave negative results.
Main soil type. Vertic-Cambisol (European Soil Data Centre; Panagos et al. 2012).
Reproduction. Probably parthenogenetic. Species known only from two females.
