Diagnosis. A medium or large-sized Dodomeira (3.20–4.55 mm) belonging to the exigua group with stubby body. Within the species group, it is recognisable by the elytra oval-elongate and sub-flat on disc. Also by elytral declivity with golden elongate, widened and raised setae (40°–45°). Penis with scutiform apex. Sizes: pronotum (length: 0.70–1.00 mm, width: 0.85–1.10 mm, ratio 0.82–0.91), elytra (length: 2.10–2.90 mm, width: 1.35–1.85 mm, ratio 1.52–1.57).
Type series. Holotype male with the following labels: [transparent label] genitalia in DHMF; [white, printed] ♂ // [white, printed] “I, Sic.[ilia], PA [Palermo], Bagheria, m.[on]te Catalfano, 170m, vaglio Olea , 30.I.2011 ” // [white, printed] “N 38°06.312’ E 013°31.069’, legg. Bellò & Chemello” // [green, printed] “Collezione Cesare Bellò” // [red, printed] “ Dodomeira margheritae , Holotype, det. Bellò & Baviera, 2016 ” (CBE).
Paratypes. 13 specimens (5 males and 8 females): “I, Sic. [ilia], PA [Palermo], Bagheria, m.[on]te Catalfano, 220m, vaglio Olea , N 38°06.319’ E 013°31.072’, 07.XI.2010, legg. Bellò & Chemello” ( CBE); 19 specimens (7 males and 12 females): “I, Sic. [ilia], PA [Palermo], Bagheria, m.[on]te Catalfano, 170m, vaglio Olea , N 38°06.312’ E 013°31.069’, 30.I.2011, legg. Bellò & Chemello” ( CBE, CBA, ECO, GOS, MCZR, MSNG, MSNM).
Holotype. Male. Total length: 3.40 mm. Stubby body and oval elytra sub-cylindrical shape. Dorsal vestiture with imbricate, silvery-brown scales with metallic sheen.
Rostrum clothed by silvery-brown scales, very transverse (length/width ratio 0.68), sub-parallelto the sides. Pterygia obvious. Epistome inconspicuous. Mesorostrum concave, anteriorly with ten thin, curved, semi-erect setae. Vertex wide and convex (vertex width / mesorostrum width: ratio 1.90) with several, widened, golden, raised setae. Interocular space without visible fovea.
Lateral, relatively small, slightly spherical eyes slightly protruding from outline of head. Antenna robust and short with recumbent, silvery, widened setae. Antenna with ratio 0.79 (scape length: 0.75 mm, funicle length: 0.95 mm). Scape clubbed slightly robust than funicle, curved al basal third and progressively thickening towards apex. Funicle segments including club, relative lengths as follows: 10.5.4.3.3.3.3.14; first four/five/ segments with widened setae; segments 4–7 pearl-shaped. Club twice wider than funicle, compact, fusiform with suture between first and second segment not visible.
Pronotum clothed with silvery-brown scales, transverse (length: 0.80 mm, width: 0.90 mm, ratio: 0.89), slightly sub-hexagonal, sinuate at the sides, wider in the middle and less wide at base of its anterior margin, with short, widened, golden raised setae. Punctation usually covered by scales. Scutellum inconspicuous. Humeri straight.
Elytra (length: 2.20 mm, width: 1.45 mm, ratio: 1.52) dorsally sub-flat, sub-oval but slightly elongate, clothed with dense silvery-brown scales, rounded on sides, wider at the middle, flat suture. Elytral declivity with widened and raised setae (35°–45°). Punctation of striae, shallow, rather catenulate and feebly impressed. Interstriae with widened, elongate, golden, raised setae.
Legs short and quite robust clothed by golden-brown scales and with short, clavate golden setae. Femora little clubbed. Protibia with three/four acute spines on inner edge, with mucro on inner apical angle. Protibia quite sinuous on inner edge, metatibia and mesotibia straight in side view.
Tarsal segment 1 short, conical; segment 2 short and transverse; segment 3 shallowly bilobed; all segments with thin golden setae. Onychium curved, robust and short.
Male genitalia. See Figures: dorsal shape aedeagus ( Fig. 49 View FIGURES 45 – 59 ), internal sac ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 45 – 59 ), sternite IX ( Fig. 59 View FIGURES 45 – 59 ), apex of penis ( Fig. 20f View FIGURES 20 – 20 ). Genitalia were examined in twelve specimens.
Paratype variability. Males and females paratypes differs in size: length (males: 3.20–3.70 mm, females 3.60–4.55 mm) and elytra length/width ratio (males 1.54, females 1.56).
Distribution. See Fig. Italian endemic.140. Known only from the type locality.
Etymology. This species named after Margherita (Pogliano Osella), in appreciation of her fundamental cooperation to many years of study and research on Curculionoidea.
Ecology and Phenology. Collected from Berlese or Winkler extraction of an olive grove in winter, sifting the leaf litter on calcareous soil, at 200–300 meters a.s.l.
Main soil type. Chromic-Luvisol (European Soil Data Centre; Panagos et al. 2012).
Reproduction. Amphigonic.
