Diagnosis. Sparganothoides vinolenta is superficially similar to S. hydeana and S. laderana , but it is larger and the male has paler hindwings. The concave curve of the sacculus distinguishes S. vinolenta from all congeners.
Description. Male. Head: Frons yellowish white, smooth scaled; vertex roughened, yellowish white to brownish yellow. Labial palpus white mesally, yellowish white to brownish yellow laterally. Antennal scaling brownish yellow to brown. Thorax: Pronotum smooth scaled, brownish yellow to golden yellow. Forewing length 10.0– 12.8 mm (= 11.7; n = 9). Forewing ground color yellowish white and brownish yellow to golden yellow, with orange, brownish orange, and/or brown indistinct, interrupted striae throughout; forewing with indistinct brown subterminal fascia; brown transverse strigulae throughout subterminal and terminal areas; often with an irregular suffused brown tornal mark approaching discal cell, abruptly angled toward base at middle; brown spot at apex of discal cell. Fringe mixed yellowish white, orange and light brown. Hindwing white with pale brown transverse striae throughout, most dense in apical and distal regions. Abdomen: Genitalia ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 19–24 ; slide #JJK138; NMNH; Mexico, Veracruz, Las Vigas; n = 8) with uncus long, slender, weakly dilated apically, elbowed at nearly 90° angle at two-thirds distance from base, with long setae dorsally and patch of small setae ventrally; tegumen slightly raised and triangular at base of uncus; socius rounded posteriorly, secondary arms long, slender, abruptly angled near middle, enlarged apices in form of an asymmetrically lobed club; transtilla strongly sclerotized, straight, spines short, numerous over most of posterior margin, anterior process dimpled at middle; valva subrectangular with straight or slightly curved sclerotized crease roughly parallel to costa, not connecting to sacculus; costa straight, sacculus strongly concave to near middle of valva, sacculus slightly produced; pulvinus present; phallus pistol-shaped, aedeagus slightly tapered, weakly curved, shorter than phallobase, attenuate apically, attached to juxta by narrow process; cornuti with minute spine near base.
Female. Head, Thorax: Essentially as described for male, except hindwing with stronger and more numerous pale brown striae, outer margins nearly entirely brown. Forewing length 12.7 mm (n = 1). Abdomen: Genitalia ( Fig. 46 View FIGURES 39–47 ; slide #5300; BMNH; Mexico, Veracruz, Las Vigas; n = 1) with papillae anales parallel-sided, rounded posteriorly; sterigma strongly sclerotized, concave anteriorly, bilobed; ductus bursae short, widened anteriorly; corpus bursae large, irregularly rounded; signum more than three times as long as wide, weakly curved, slightly bilobed near ends on inside of curve, rounded at apices.
Type material. Holotype: Male: MEXICO: VERACRUZ: Las Vigas, 8000’, 1887, W. Schaus, slide #4688 ( BMNH).
Paratypes (2♂, 2♀), MEXICO: VERACRUZ: Las Vigas, 8000’, 1887 (1♂), W. Schaus ( BMNH), [no date] (3♂) ( NMNH) .
Additional specimens examined (12♂, 1♀). MEXICO: DISTRITO FEDERAL: La Venta , 22.v.1938 (1♂), vi (1♂), T. Escalante ( EME, NMNH) . VERACRUZ: Las Vigas , 8000’, [no date] (3♂, 1♀), W. Schaus ( BMNH) . [No locality data] [no date] (6♂), v (1♂), W. Schaus ( EME, NMNH) .
Immature Stages. Unknown.
Remarks. Four of the original paratypes of vinolenta now are recognized as other species: Wlsm. 6012 (= S. calthograptana ), Wlsm. 6013 and 6017 (= S. laderana ), and Wlsm. 6016 (= S. aciculana ); all are from Popocatepetl, Mexico, Mexico (NMNH).
