Ittys macfarlandi New Species

( Figs. 10 View FIGURES 8–11 , 13 View FIGURES 12–15 , 18–19)

Diagnosis. TSS widest medially, with distinct anterior tapering, distinct field of spines anterior and submedial to terminal spine, apex of terminal spine usually attaining level of digitus ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 8–11 ).

Description. Length: Male 0.68–1.0 mm, female 0.84–1.10 mm (without ovipositor 0.62–0.86 mm).

Color: Both sexes light brown with variation as follows: Head with gena and parascrobal area brown, darker than vertex. Antennae brown, F1 darker than F2. Mesoscutum with two indistinct orangish lateral maculae. Metapleuron and upper mesepisternum usually dark brown. Metasomal segments with two distinct brown latitudinal bands on Mt6-7, band on Mt6 encompasses entire segment, Mt7 band narrow.

Male: Head 0.80 as long/wide, interocular distance 0.55 head width. Antennae with scape widest medially; A2 relatively large and appressed to F1; C1, C2, and C3 0.36, 0.37, 0.44 total club length respectively; F1- 0(?)-2 BPS; F2- 2 BPS; C- 1-3 BPS, C2 and C3 each with 1 BPS; C1- 1 PS extending from C1 to C2, C2- 1 PS extending length of C2, C3- 2 PS extending length of segment; club segments with CHS relatively sparse, C2 with ca. 5 evenly distributed CHS, maximum length of CHS on C2 0.048 mm.

Mesosoma: Mesoscutum ca. 1.1 as wide /long; scutellum ca. 1.7 as wide/long. Forewing 0.45 as wide / long; venation attaining ca. 0.7 length of wing; RS2 distinct; r-m crossvein distinct; median vein track absent; 1 st and 2 nd branch of cubital vein track present but not distinct; anal vein track present; RS1 distinct with ca. 6 setae; fringe setae short, 0.20 maximum width of wing; relative length of submarginal, premarginal, marginal and stigmal veins, 1.6, 1.0, 1.4, 0.6 respectively; postmarginal extension absent; premarginal short wide relative to submarginal; apical corner of costal cell with variable number of setae (ca. 2–6); forewing with infuscation from stigmal to posterior margin extending along posterior margin from medial area of anal vein track to base of RS1( Fig. 9E–F View FIGURES 8–11 ). Legs with relative length of coxa, trochanter, femur, tibia and (tarsomeres) as follows: fore leg- 3.8: 1.8: 6.4: 5.2: (2.2: 2.1:2.4); middle leg- 3.2: 2.0: 6.2: 7.9: (3.9: 2.2: 2.5); hind leg- 5.3: 2.5: 6.2: 7.8: (2.5: 2.5: 2.5).

Metasoma: TSS narrowest at anterior and posterior margins, widest medially; terminal setae submedial with an adjacent field of spines anteriorly. Apex of terminal setae attaining level of the volsellar digitus ( Fig. 11B View FIGURES 8–11 ). Genitalia with digital spine absent on volsellae; length of genitalia vs. HTL 0.82–1.00; apodemes to total length of aedeagus 0.54–0.66; dorsal aperture length to width of 0.71–1.00; AD to length of genitalia 0.16–0.24.

Female. Similar to male except as follows: F1- 4 BPS; F2- 4-5 BPS; C1- 2-3 BPS; C2- 1 BPS; C3- 1 BPS; C1- 1 PS and 1 PS extending from C1 to C2, C2- 3 PS extending length of C2, C3- 4-5PS extending length of segment; C2 with ca. 5 CHS, maximum length of CHS ca. 0.050mm; HTL/OL 0.28-0.31.

Distribution. Known from southeastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico and Texas.

Biology. Unknown.

Etymology. Named for Noel McFarland, the collector of the type series.

Comments. Ittys macfarlandi can be confused with I. ceresarum and I. californica . It is readily differentiated from I. ceresarum by the absence of the volsellar digital spine present in I. ceresarum and the relative proportions of the TSS. I. californica has a relatively longer F1 than I. macfarlandi ( Figs. 14,13 View FIGURES 12–15 respectively). I. californica also lacks the extensive field of spines anterior and medial to the terminal seta on the TSS ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 8–11 ).
