Vernacular Names: Giant Panda.
Distribution: China (Sichuan, Shensi, Gansu; perhaps Qinghai, on E edge of Tibetan plateau).
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Endangered.
Discussion: Regarded by Hendey (1980 a, b) as the only surviving species in the subfamily Agriotheriinae . Placed in the monotypic family Ailuropodidae by Thenius (1979). Reviewed by Chorn and Hoffmann (1978).
