Pheidole longior Santschi, new status

Pheidole (Elasmopheidole) cavifrons st. longior Santschi 1933f: 110. types Naturhist. Mus. Basel.

Etymology L longior , longer, referring to the head shape of the major.

diagnosis Closest to cavifrons , somewhat less similar to aberrans and obnixa , distinguished as follows.

Major: head markedly elongate (Head Length/Head Width 1.47), and bicolored (see under Color below); dorsal posterior half of head profile flat; frontal lobes in full-face view taper anteriorly into blunt acute angles; carinulae originating on frontal lobes reach well past midpoint between eyes and occiput; mesosomal convexity in side view reduced, obliquely angular; propodeal spines denticulate; promesonotum smooth and shiny. Minor: nearly identical to minor of cavifrons (q.v.).

Measurements (mm) Lectotype major: HW 0.72, HL 1.06, SL 0.30, EL 0.06, PW 0.50. Paralectotype minor: HW 0.50, HL 0.58, SL 0.36, EL 0.04, PW 0.32.

color Major: strikingly bicolored, with anterior fourth of head dark brown, and rest of body medium yellow.

Minor: concolorous light yellow.

range Known only from the type locality.

Biology Unknown.

Figure Upper: lectotype, major. ARGENTTNA: Loreto, Misiones. The minor is nearly identical to the minor of cavifrons (q.v.). Scale bar = 1 mm.
