Felder & R. Robles coll. 6 May 2003, shoreline and intertidal.
Size. Males from cl 4.2 to 6.2, females (ovigerous) from cl 4.1 to 6.3.
Remarks. In a phylogenetic MP analysis of 16S and 12S rDNA data, the material of Paratrypaea from Hawaii groups together with P. bouvieri (see Felder & Robles, 2009). Data of P. m a l d i v e n s i s were not yet included in this study, but unpublished data show that P. maldivensis and Paratrypaea sp. from Hawaii can be separated using both 16S and 12S (R. Robles pers. comm. 5 May 2009).
This species is morphologically very similar to P. maldivensis , especially with respect to the chelipeds, but has the rostrum shorter and relatively longer and more slender eyestalks than P. bouvieri and P. maldivensis . The telson is more squarish than in the other two species, slightly indented at the posterior edge, and has a prominent median spine as in P. maldivensis .
