Cypris (Strandesia) Stuhlmann, 1888 — Vavra, 1895: 18. Acanthocypris Claus, 1892 — Martens & Behen, 1994: 47. Neocypris Sars, 1901 — Martens & Behen, 1994: 47.
Type species: Strandesia mercatorum ( Vavra, 1895)
Abbreviated diagnosis. Carapace morphology diverse in shape (subovate, subelliptical, moderately elongated), some species with prominent spines and/or (dorsal) protuberances. Carapace in frontal view symmetrical, not oblique. Valve surface smooth, but often with pitted, reticulated or punctate LV with groove along anterior, ventral and posterior margins, and with or without one inner list along anterior margin. Inner lamella calcified, anteriorly wider than posteriorly. Selvage onot RV clearly inwardly displaced along anterior and posterior margin. LV overlapping RV on all sides. T1 with a-, b- and d-setae. Md α-seta smooth, unsegmented. Attachment of the caudal ramus stout, with Triebel’s loop large, situated in the main branch; ventral and dorsal branches present. Caudal ramus relatively stout, with fine setulae on ventral margin, in some species set with rows of spines. Hemipenis with lateral shield large and elongated, in some species with distal end wing-like and with a symmetrical penile attachment situated at the proximal connected bases; one spermiduct loop. Zenker’s organ with cone-shaped chitinous sheet at both ends.
Differential diagnosis. Strandesia has Cypricercus as its closest relative. It can be distinguished from it by the unsegmented α-seta on Md-palp, the presence of a small channel in the fused zone of the LV and by features of the Zenker’s organ ( Table 1 View TABLE 1 ). Strandesia can be distinguished from Astenocypris and Tanycypris by the presence of a continuous marginal groove on LV and of a d-seta on T1; and from Bradleystrandesia by the position of the Triebel loop in the attachment of the caudal ramus. It can also be confused with Bradleycypris , but the latter is primarily characterized by the presence of clearly oblique carapace in frontal view and the absence of a well developed inner list on LV.
