Lectotype (Conway in Brit. Phycol. Bull. 2: 349, pl. I, f. 1. 1964): [icon] " Tremella marina umbilicata " in Dillenius, Hist. Musc.: 45, t. 8, f. 3. 1741. - Voucher: Herb. Dillenius ( OXF) .

Current name: Porphyra umbilicalis (L.) Kütz. ( Bangiaceae ).

Note: Conway, in typifying the name, also treated a specimen in the Dillenian Synopsis herbarium (OXF), illustrated as pl. 1, f. 2, as a typotype. However, John & al. (in Bull. Brit. Mus. ( Nat. Hist.), Bot. 7: 77. 1979) disagreed that this was the basis for the illustration, arguing that a collection in the Sherard herbarium (OXF) is a better match for the figure.
