Gomphrena sessilis Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 225. 1753.

“Habitat in India.” RCN: 1684.

Basionym of: Illecebrum sessile (L.) L. (1762).

Lectotype (Fawcett & Rendle, Fl. Jamaica 3: 140. 1914; Mears in Taxon 29: 89. 1980): Herb. Hermann 2: 9, No. 116 (BM-000621528).

Current name: Altemanthera sessilis (L.) DC. (Amaranthaceae).

Note: Fawcett & Rendle’s original indication of the Hermann material as type was restricted by Mears to the material in vol. 2: 9 (BM). Mears’ choice (1 Feb 1980) appears to narrowly pre-date that of Townsend (in Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 1: 49. Feb 1980), who instead chose the material in vol. 2: 78.
