Key to Stenogephrya species

1. Vein M2 reaching wing margin; katepisternum completely covered with silver pubescence; silver pubescence on gena (lateral view) abundant, reaching from lower eye margin to ventral margin of head ( Figs. 3, 7, 11 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ) and dorsally on occiput to about mid-height of eye; dorsocentral macrosetae absent; two pairs of notopleural macrosetae.............................. 2

- Vein M2 usually abbreviated, not reaching wing margin ( Lyneborg 1987, Fig. 6 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); at least ventral part of katepisternum glossy without silver pubescence, except in S. schlingeri View in CoL in which the katepisternum is completely pubescent; silver pubescence on gena (lateral view) predominately absent, restricted on occiput to band along posterior margin of eye from vertex to lower eye margin ( Figs. 5, 9, 13, 15 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); one pair of dorsocentral macrosetae; 2–3 pairs of notopleural macrosetae................... 4

2. Silver pubescence along anterior eye margin with large triangular extension at height of antenna, which nearly reaches antennal base and second, smaller, semicircular extension at height of median ocellus, both are connected by narrow line along eye margin ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); halter with more white than brown; male gonocoxite lateral view ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 16 – 21 ) with posteroventral projection......................................................................................... dianeae View in CoL spec. nov.

- Silver pubescence along anterior eye margin not greatly expanded at level of antennal base and not reaching height of frontal ocellus ( Figs. 6, 10 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); halter predominately dark brown to black; male gonocoxite in lateral view (Fig. 24) lacking posteroventral projection......................................................................................... 3

3. Silver pubescence along anterior eye margin of equal width to broadened area below level of eyes ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ) parkeri View in CoL spec. nov.

- Silver pubescence along anterior eye margin wider at height of antennal base then becoming narrow before broadened area below level of eyes ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 2 – 15 )................................................................. minuta Lyneborg View in CoL

4. Silver pubescence along anterior eye margin restricted to a single semicircular expansion at level of antennal base ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); two pairs of notopleural macrosetae; katepisternum completely silver pubescence; lower face broadly rounded ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 2 – 15 )......................................................................................... schlingeri View in CoL spec. nov.

- Silver pubescence along anterior eye margin forming two connected markings and often reaching below lower eye margin ( Figs. 4, 8, 14 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); three pairs of notopleural macrosetae; katepisternum glossy ventrally; lower face with central hemispherical bulge and laterally the gena and lower frons forming another bulge separated from central bulge by deep furrow, creating impression of a “nose” ( Figs. 5, 9, 15 View FIGURES 2 – 15 )..................................................................... 5

5. Silver pubescence along anterior eye margin reaching lower face ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); silver pubescence on frons present, silver pubescence on occiput forming a complete band posteriorly on occiput behind ocellar tubercle ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); halter knob completely white................................................................................... namibiensis View in CoL spec. nov.

- Silver pubescence along anterior eye margin not reaching lower face ( Figs. 4, 14 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); silver pubescence on frons between median ocellus and eye absent; silver pubescence on occiput not forming continuous band posterior to ocellar tubercle ( Figs. 4, 14 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); halter predominately dark brown to black................................................................... 6

6. Silver pubescence on occiput present forming an uninterrupted, narrow band from posterad of ocellar tubercle to posteroventral eye margin ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); silver pubescence along anterior eye margin extending ventrally beyond lower eye margin ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); “nose” less pronounced ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 2 – 15 )............................................................ torrida Lyneborg View in CoL

- Silver pubescence on occiput restricted to posteroventral eye margin ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); silver pubescence along anterior eye margin ending before or at level of lower eye margin ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 2 – 15 ); “nose” more pronounced ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 2 – 15 )................. janiceae View in CoL spec. nov.
