Description. Body black, shiny; legs, elytra and pronotum dark brown. Forebody pubescent, with punctation and striation varying strongly, from densely punctate and striate to almost smooth on surface, especially so in head and pronotum. Body length [average] male, 4.07 mm; female, 3.69 mm.
Male: Head ( Fig. 3-1C, 3-2A View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) slightly broader than pronotum. Disc extremely convex, with dense sculptures to nearly not sculptured; mid-longitudinal sulcus narrow and deep, with deep rounded impression on each side before base. Supra-antennal ridge with margin incrassate and convex. Temples dilated, approximately two times as long as eyes. Clypeus nearly square, about 1/3 of total head length, slightly depressed and coriaceous, with a few punctures; anterior margin weakly rounded and protruded. Epistomal suture with lateral portions straight and parallel, running backward to level of anterior margin of eyes.
Occipital suture slightly curved forward in middle. Antenna filiform, segment IV globular, V–X short and transverse, with ultimate one stilliform. Neck without smooth area.
Pronotum ( Fig. 3-1D, 3-2A View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) transverse, broadest at near anterior 1/3, with dense sculptures to slightly sculptured; mid-longitudinal sulcus straight and deep, narrowing to base; two paramedial sulci shallower and broader, and interpolated by obtuse longitudinal carina between mid-longitudinal sulcus and paramedial sulcus; shallow depressions close to lateral margins. Anterior margin nearly straight or broadly emarginate near each anterolateral angle. Anterolateral angles sharply produced. Lateral and posterior margins running continuously, posterior angles rounded but distinguishable. Lateral margin weakly crenate on posterior half or not crenate at all. Scutellum with crest-shaped impression, with median lobe sharply pointed. Elytra densely striate and punctate, not pubescent; lateral margin curved, posterior margins truncate and slightly slant. Abdomen coriaceous, covered with punctures and pubescence. Sternite VII ( Fig. 3-1G, 3-2C View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) with posterior margin slightly emarginate and bearing long setae laterally, with two small tubercles in middle, not beyond posterior margin. Sternite VIII ( Fig. 3-1H, 3- 2D View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) with posterior margin broadly emarginate and bearing long setae laterally, not produced in middle.
Aedeagus ( Fig. 3-1J–N, 3-3A–C View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) with median lobe oval, inflated at base and shortly narrowing to apex; apical orifice large and ventral orifice crescentic; internal sac of median lobe with complicated sclerites. Parameres ( Fig. 3-1O, 3-3D View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) closely situated, and twining around median lobe; apex flattened and slightly enlarged, with thick seta at middle of ventral edge of each paramere.
Female. Head ( Fig. 3-1E, 3-2B View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) smaller than male, narrower than pronotum; head and pronotum ( Fig. 3-1F, 3- 2B View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) densely covered with coarse punctures and striae, not displaying much variation as in male. Temples shorter than eyes. Sternite VII ( Fig. 3-2E View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) lateral potion with some long setae and posterior margin slightly emarginate. Sternite VIII ( Fig. 3- 1I, 3-2F View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) with posterior margin produced, broadly and obtusely triangular. Spermatheca ( Fig. 3-1P, 3-3E View FIGURE 3 - 3 ) bulb-like at base and with apical part clavate and slightly curved.
Distribution. China (Sichuan, Yunnan).
Etymology. The species epithet is from the Latin terms " vari- " (varied) and "sculptilis " (sculptured), to indicate the varied striae on head and pronotum.
Differential diagnosis. This new species is similar to A. sikkimi ( Fauvel, 1905) in appearance, but can be distinguished from the latter by the following characteristics: supra-antennal ridge extremely convex; head and pronotum glabrous with punctures deeper and stronger striae, which are sometimes sparse and not so dense; head with punctures smaller and clypeus depressed. Male sternite VII is slightly emarginate, sternite VIII not produced in the middle. Whereas A. sikkimi Fauvel, 1905 has the head and pronotum glabrous with dense striae, its head punctures are relatively larger, its clypeus convex, sternite VII straight and sternite VIII produced in the middle in male, The new species is also similar to A. inustus ( Gravenhorst, 1806) in the structure of the male genitalia, but it can be distinguished from the latter by the details in aedeagus structures, i.e. its paramere is roundly produced with its ventral edge near the base and without seta on apex; its median lobe and internal sac are with complicated sclerites which differ from each other in the two species. By contrast, A. inustus ( Gravenhorst, 1806) with its paramere has two processes of the ventral edge near the base, and its apex of paramere has a pinch of setae.
Remarks. The males of this new species display very strong variation in the appearance of sculptures on the forebody, especially so on head and pronotum. This kind of variation has no correlation with geographical distribution or special gradients ( Fig. 3–4 View FIGURE 3 - 3 View FIGURE 3 – 4 ).
