Material examined. 1 adult male, holotype (IO/SS/TAN/00001), 6.5 mm TL , 1 subadult male, paratype (IO/ SS/TAN/00002), 5.0 mm TL , Southeastern Arabian Sea , off Kanyakumari, India, FORVSS stn. 23621, 8.05°N, 77.35°E, 32 m depth, Smith McIntyre Grab, date not recorded. 1 subadult male, (IO/SS/TAN/00003), 5.9 mm TL , Southeastern Arabian Sea , off Kanyakumari, India, FORVSS stn. 26063, 7.45°N, 77.71°E, 108.8 m depth, Smith McIntyre Grab, date not recorded.

Diagnosis (adult male). Rostrum round, pronounced. Pleotelson with numerous posterior simple setae. Antennule with inner flagellum of six articles, first peduncle article lacking ventral spiniform setae, third and fourth articles of outer flagellum with five aesthetascs each. Antenna with third peduncle article bearing one plumose seta on inner margin, fourth peduncle article without broom setae; flagellum with six articles, second and third articles with several simple setae on outer margin. Mandibular palp with terminal naked spiniform seta approximately 5.5 times as long as broad. Male cheliped basis with one spiniform seta and one simple seta on ventrodistal margin, cutting edge of dactylus with six setae distal to proximal tooth, cutting edge of fixed finger with rounded tooth near dactylus insertion, elongated proximal tooth and four tubercles interspersed with simple setae proximal to unguis. Exopodite of cheliped and pereopod 1 with three plumose setae. Pereopod 4 and 5 dactylus with five sensory setae. Pereopod 4 propodus bearing short bipinnate setae on inner and outer surfaces. Pereopod 6 dactylus shorter than carpus and propodus combined, with one subterminal seta. Uropod exopod with three articles, last article approximately 1.7 times as long as second article.

Description of holotype male: Carapace ( Figs. 2A–B View FIGURE 2 , 3A View FIGURE 3 ) slightly longer than broad, with one pair of anterolateral setae; rostrum rounded, pronounced. Pereonites ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ) 4 and 5 longer than others and pereonite 6 shortest, all rounded laterally; at least one pair each of dorsal, anterolateral, and posterolateral setae; hyposphenia present on all pereonites. First three pereopods 5.1, 10.4 and 9.4 times as long as broad, respectively. Pleon ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ) with subequal pleonites; rounded epimera, with several plumose setae, one pair dorsal simple, one pair lateral simple setae, and several pairs of lateral plumose setae; hyposphenia present on all pleonites. Pleotelson ( Fig. 3B View FIGURE 3 ) 2.0 times shorter than combined length pleonites 1–5, rounded, narrowing posteriorly to rounded tip, with several pairs of lateral, posterior, and dorsal simple setae.

Antennule ( Fig. 3C View FIGURE 3 ) with first peduncle article approximately 2.5 times as long as second and third articles combined, and approximately three times as long as maximum width, with some simple setae on inner margin and several simple setae on outer margin. Second peduncle article approximately 3.75 times shorter than first article, with several simple and broom setae on lateral margin. Third article slightly longer than fourth. Outer flagellum shorter than first peduncle article, with nine articles, cluster of five aesthetascs each present on proximal articles 1 to 4, two aesthetascs each on common article and articles 5 to 7. Inner flagellum with six articles, last article with three terminal simple setae.

Antenna ( Fig. 3D View FIGURE 3 ) with first peduncle article with one small simple seta on outer distal corner and medial extension bearing five plumose setae. Second peduncle article naked and squama with seven simple setae. Third peduncle article with one plumose seta on inner margin. Fourth (last) peduncle article longer than flagellum, with double row of plumose setae. Flagellum with six articles, proximal three articles with several simple setae on margins, fourth and fifth articles with one simple seta each on outer margin, two simple setae each on inner margin, sixth article with one simple seta each on inner and outer margins and three terminal simple setae.

Labrum not examined.

Left mandible ( Fig. 4A View FIGURE 4 ) incisor process with eight teeth; lacinia mobilis with six teeth, spine row with five serrate spiniform setae. Palp uniarticulate, with row of 37 plumose setae along margin, and short terminal spiniform seta approximately 5.5 times as long as broad. Right mandible damaged.

Labium ( Fig. 4B View FIGURE 4 ) palp with short hair-like setae on margins, terminating in acuminate inner tip.

Maxillule ( Fig. 4C View FIGURE 4 ) inner endite bearing four terminally setulate setae and dense rows of hair-like setae on outer and inner margins. Outer endite with 13 long and four short spiniform setae, one pappose seta, and dense rows of hair-like setae on outer and inner margins. Palp absent.

Maxilla ( Fig. 4D View FIGURE 4 ) Inner lobe of fixed endite with posterior row of three serrate spiniform setae and with long anterior row of setae. Outer lobe of fixed endite with four distal serrate setae, several simple setae, and one serrate spiniform seta on posterior face. Inner lobe of movable endite with several setae with terminal cusps (number of cusps indeterminate). The outer lobe of movable endite with few pectinate and plumo-denticulate (bearing proximal setules and distal denticles) setae. Inner margin spinulate.

Maxilliped ( Fig. 4E View FIGURE 4 ) basal article fringed with plumose setae on outer margin, inner margin naked. First article of palp with seven simple setae on inner margin. Last three articles of palp with double row of long plumose setae on inner margin; second article with one simple seta on outer distal corner. Endite with seven pappose setae along inner margin, eight to nine distal serrate setae; two coupling hooks ( Fig. 4F View FIGURE 4 ).

Male cheliped ( Fig. 5A View FIGURE 5 ) basis with one long simple seta and a spiniform seta on ventrodistal margin. Merus longer than broad, with four distal simple setae (two long and two short) on ventrodistal corner, one short simple seta on ventral margin. Carpus approximately 3.1 times as long as broad, with double row of long, plumose setae ventrally and few short simple setae on dorsal margin and dorsodistal corner. Propodus robust, with longitudinal row of long, plumose setae on inner face; fixed finger with large, rounded tooth near dactylus insertion, cutting edge with a large elongated proximal tooth, and four tubercles interspersed with eight simple setae just proximal to distal unguis. Dactylus cutting edge with six setae distal to proximal tooth, and with simple setae on dorsal margin. Exopodite with three plumose setae (two long and one short).

Pereopod 1 ( Fig. 5B View FIGURE 5 ) basis approximately 2.3 times as long as broad, with two short ventrodistal spiniform and two long simple setae. Ischium with one simple seta on ventral margin. Merus longer than broad, shorter than and nearly as broad as basis, with several simple setae distally and on ventral margin, one short spiniform seta on each distal corner. Carpus approximately 2.1 times shorter than merus, with several simple setae and two long ventrodistal and one short dorsodistal serrate spiniform setae. Propodus shorter than carpus, with several simple setae and five ventral and two dorsal serrate spiniform setae. Dactylus represented by sensory organ, shorter than propodus, with several long, terminal sensory setae with two setae on inner surface; unguis absent. Exopodite present, with three long plumose distal setae.

Pereopod 2 ( Fig. 5C View FIGURE 5 ) basis approximately 3.8 times as long as broad, with two simple setae near dorsal margin, one long seta and one short simple seta near ventral margin and two shorter simple setae on ventrodistal corner. Ischium with one simple seta each on ventrodistal and dorsodistal corners. Merus slightly shorter than carpus, with three simple setae and one spiniform seta on ventral margin. Carpus approximately 1.6 times as long as broad, with one simple seta on dorsal margin, three simple setae and two serrate spiniform setae on ventral margin, two long simple setae and four serrate spiniform setae on distal outer surface. Propodus more than three times shorter than basis, with one long and several short distal simple setae, one long and three short distal spiniform setae, five ventral and one dorsodistal serrate spiniform setae. Dactylus shorter than basis, slightly shorter than carpus and propodus combined; sensory organ present near base, with five sensory setae; unguis fused with dactylus.

Pereopod 3 ( Fig. 5D View FIGURE 5 ) basis approximately 3.4 times as long as broad, with one proximal and two distal simple setae near ventral margin. Ischium with one simple seta on ventral margin. Merus shorter than carpus, with one simple seta and one serrate spiniform seta on ventral margin. Carpus approximately 1.6 times as long as broad, with four serrate spiniform setae on ventral margin, one serrate spiniform seta on ventrodistal corner, two serrate spiniform setae on distal outer surface, two serrate spiniform setae and one long simple seta on dorsodistal corner. Propodus 3.8 times shorter than basis, with five serrate spiniform setae on ventral margin, one serrate spiniform seta and three simple setae on distal margin, one long and two short serrate spiniform setae on dorsodistal corner. Dactylus shorter than basis, slightly shorter than carpus and propodus combined; sensory organ present near base, with four sensory setae; unguis fused with dactylus.

Pereopod 4 ( Fig. 5E View FIGURE 5 ) basis approximately 2.9 times as long as broad, with two short ventrodistal simple setae, two longer dorsodistal simple setae, and two proximal broom setae and two simple setae on dorsal margin. Ischium with two ventrodistal simple setae. Merus shorter than carpus, with three simple setae and two spiniform setae ventrodistally. Carpus with seven serrate spiniform setae each on outer and inner surfaces. Propodus with eight serrate spiniform setae on outer surface, nine serrate spiniform setae on inner surface, one terminal serrate spiniform seta, four short bipinnate setae on outer surface and four on inner surface, and one proximal broom seta on dorsal margin. Dactylus shorter than propodus, with tuft of approximately five sensory setae; unguis absent.

Pereopod 5 ( Fig. 5F View FIGURE 5 ) basis approximately 2.7 times as long as broad, with one long ventrodistal simple seta, one long and one short dorsodistal simple setae. Ischium with one long seta and one short ventrodistal simple seta. Merus shorter than carpus, with three simple setae and two serrate spiniform setae ventrodistally. Carpus with four serrate spiniform setae and one long simple seta on ventral margin, five serrate spiniform setae distally on outer surface. Propodus with five simple setae on ventral margin, five serrate spiniform setae on inner surface, two terminal serrate spiniform setae, and one proximal broom seta on dorsal margin; bipinnate setae on outer and inner surfaces absent. Dactylus shorter than propodus, with tuft of five sensory setae; unguis absent.

Pereopod 6 ( Fig. 5G View FIGURE 5 ) basis slender, approximately five times as long as broad, with seven long plumose setae on dorsal margin, seven short plumose and three long simple setae on ventral margin. Ischium with four simple setae on ventral margin. Merus slightly longer than ischium, with two plumose setae on dorsal margin, one plumose seta on dorsodistal corner, four simple setae on ventral margin. Carpus approximately twice as long as merus, with nine long and short simple setae on ventral margin, four simple setae on dorsal margin, and one long and two short simple setae distally on outer surface. Propodus shorter than the carpus, with four spiniform setae and 29 short bipinnate setae on ventral margin. Dactylus shorter than carpus and propodus combined, with single subdistal seta; unguis absent.

Pleopods ( Fig. 5H View FIGURE 5 ) basal article with four long plumose setae. Exopodite with 26 plumose setae and endopodite with 28 plumose setae.

Uropods ( Fig. 3B View FIGURE 3 ) basal article 1.8 times as long as broad, with three simple setae on outer margin and two distal simple setae. Exopodite with three articles, distal article longest, approximately 1.7 times as long as second article, with three simple setae. Endopodite with approximately 20 articles (exact number difficult to determine due to incomplete fusion in some articles).

Description of paratype subadult male: Overall morphology very similar to holotype male ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ).

Antennule ( Fig. 6A View FIGURE 6 ) with first peduncle article approximately 2.6 times as long as second and third articles combined, and approximately 2.8 times as long as maximum width, with few simple setae on inner margin and several simple setae on outer margin. Second peduncle article approximately 3.8 times shorter than first article, with one broom seta and several simple setae. Third article subequal to fourth in length. Outer flagellum subequal to first peduncle article in length, with nine articles, cluster of three aesthetascs each present on articles 1 and 5, four aesthetascs each on articles 2 to 4. Inner flagellum with six articles, last article with three terminal simple setae.

Cheliped ( Fig. 6B View FIGURE 6 ) basis with one long and two short simple setae and one spiniform seta on ventrodistal margin. Merus longer than broad, with two distal and two subdistal simple setae on ventral margin. Carpus 4.1 times as long as broad, with double row of long, plumose setae ventrally and four short simple setae on dorsal margin. Propodus elongate with diagonal row of long, plumose setae on inner face; fixed finger with several simple setae just proximal to distal spine; cutting edge with tubercles interspersed with simple setae; palm with several simple setae near dactylus insertion. Dactylus with few simple setae midway on inner surface and four simple setae just proximal to distal unguis; cutting edge with 4 setae; unguis present. Exopodite with three plumose setae.

Etymology. The species name is derived from the name of the type locality, Kanyakumari, India; noun in apposition.

Remarks. Kalliapseudes kanyakumari sp. nov. closely resembles the Australian K. dongarae Drumm & Heard, 2011 , the West African K. primitivus Nierstrasz, 1913 , and the Malaysian K. bamberi Drumm & Heard, 2011 in possessing a rounded rostrum, a naked spiniform seta on the mandibular palp, a spiniform seta on ventrodistal margin of cheliped basis (unknown in K. primitivus ), the basis of pereopods 2 and 3 with setae shorter than length of basis, having terminal serrate spiniform setae on the propodus of pereopod 5, a subterminal seta on the dactylus of pereopod 6, and in the absence of subterminal spiniform setae on propodus of pereopod 6.
