Agapetus cannensis sp. nov.

Material examined: Holotype male: Victoria: 37°25’S 149°11’E, Cann River, 33 km N Cann River, 5.ii.1987, Walker & McPhee, NMV [Tri-485, Ag-17].

Paratype: New South Wales: 30°26’S 152°44’E, Bellinger River, 31.x.1981, Wells & Carter, 1 male, NMV.

Diagnosis: The male of this species is distinctive, having the gonopods in lateral view evenly excised subapicoventrally, curved and tapered to a sclerotised, down-turned apex. This species shares the form of its phallic apparatus with those of A. cralus and other similar species.

Forewing length: Male, 2.4–3.3 mm.

Male genitalia: Abdominal segment IX deeply angulate anterolaterally in lateral view, posterolateral margins roundly produced. Segment X membranous, divided mesally, in lateral view rounded apically, slightly shorter than gonopods. Cerci stout, parallel-sided. Gonopods in lateral view stout in basal 2/3rds, curving ventrad and tapering to attenuate, sclerotised apices. Phallic apparatus includes pair of striated parameres.

Female: Unknown.

Etymology: Named for the type locality.

Distribution: This species is known only from the type locality in far eastern Victoria, near the border with New South Wales, and from the Bellinger River of northeastern New South Wales.
