Colour

Head with the anterior yellow and the posterior vertex silver-white; ocelli red-brown and eyes brown, two black-brown spots behind the lateral ocelli; a black-brown spot adjacent to each antennal torulus; most of occipital region black-brown; mandible dark brown distally. Mesosoma with the grooves evidently black-brown, and the mesoscutum dark yellow; the middle of pronotal collar dark brown with black spots laterally; mid-lobe of mesoscutum with a large anchor-shaped dark brown marking; side-lobes of mesoscutum dark brown anteromedially, and yellow along the margin of the axilla; axillae entirely, dark brown; mesoscutellum with a large leaf-shaped dark brown marking; metascutellum and propodeum partly dark brown; the sterna of mesosoma mostly dark brown. Metasoma with the anterior margin and posterior margin of petiole black brown; the tergites of gaster marked by transverse black brown bands, and with black spots on the sides of bands; the sterna of the metasoma mostly black-brown. Ovipositor with the third valvula black-brown. Antenna with most of scape black-brown, except for the dorsal margin, a medial longitudinal stripe and a short stripe on ventralapex white; pedicel with the dorsal half white and the ventral half black brown; funicular segments white, except for a black brown area apico-ventrally on F3; club segments black-brown. Fore wing with pale area bearing fine pale setae on the small area below the apical half of marginal vein, and on the wing margin from the end of the venation to the end of retinaculum, and with another infuscated area comprising short black-brown setae on an infuscate background. Legs mostly white, femora apically and tibiae basally dark, the tarsi yellow except for the last tarsus apically dark ( Figures 3 View Figure 3 (d,e), 4(a,d) and 5(a–c)).

Head

Eyes finely setose. Mandibles with two teeth and a truncation; maxillary palpi 2-segmented, labial palpi 1-segmented. Frontovertex reticulate with short dark setae. Antenna 8-segmented, antennal formula 1,1,3,3; scape strongly expanded, 2.02 times as long as wide; pedicel longer than F1 (36: 25), 1.25 times as long as wide, shorter than F2 and F3 (36: 38: 40) respectively; F1 1.14 times as wide as long, evidently shorter than F2 and F3 (25: 38: 40) respectively; F2 1.81 times as wide as long, with two longitudinal sensilla, nearly equal to F3; F3 1.67 times as long as wide, with three longitudinal sensilla; C1: C2: C3 as 40: 35: 30, bearing 1–4 longitudinal sensilla respectively ( Figures 4 View Figure 4 (b)).

Mesosoma

Setae on mesosoma slender and dark brown, pronotum and mesonotal sclerites distinctly reticulate. Mid-lobe of mesoscutum with about 50 setae, each side lobe with 4 setae, each axilla with 3 setae; mesoscutellum with 3 pairs of setae, the posterior pair longer, placoid sensilla located between the middle pair. Metascutellum short and arrow-shaped, with reticulate sculpture except at sides. Propodeum medially reticulate, 0.80 times as long as metascutellum ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (c)).

Fore wing

Fore wing 2.60 times as long as wide, marginal fringe 0.14 times as long as width of wing disk; pale area bearing dense fine pale setae; basal cell and infuscated area on wing disk bearing dense short black brown setae; costal cell with a row of about 11short setae and 5 coarse setae at apex ( Figures 5 View Figure 5 (b)). Submarginal vein bearing 9 coarse setae. Marginal vein bearing 11 subequal setae along anterior margin. Stigmal vein apically expanded, with 4 sensilla.

Metasoma

Petiole smooth. T1-T4 reticulate laterally, bearing 1–2 setae in each reticulate area; T5 reticulate laterally and sparsely reticulate centrally, with a row of 8 setae; T6 mostly reticulate, bearing a row of 6 setae between spiracles; T7 triangular and reticulate, bearing 11 setae. Ovipositor located at base of T3, slightly projecting beyond apex of metasoma, 1.36 times as long as mid-tibia; third valvula 0.45 times as long as second valvifer; about half of outer valvula bearing dense setae. Legs with tarsal formula 5-5-5, mid-tibial spur 1.21 times as long as length of corresponding basitarsus ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (d)).

Male

Unknown.

Pupa

The pupa of C. yunnana sp. nov. is dark yellow with black brown markings as in the adult ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (b,c)).

Host

Coccidae : an unidentified coccid on Kopsia fruticosa (Ker) ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (a)).

Distribution

China (Yunnan).

Etymology

The specific name is derived from the collection locality, Yunnan.

Diagnosis

Coccophagus yunnana sp. nov. resembles C. anchoroides (Huang) in having the mid lobe of mesoscutum with a large anchor-shaped dark brown marking, and the fore wing with a pale area bearing fine pale setae and an infuscated area comprising short black-brown setae on an infuscate background ( Figures 1 View Figure 1 (b,c), 4(a) and 5(c)), but can be distinguished from C. anchoroides by the following characters: antennal scape with a short white stripe on ventral apex, F1 entirely white, F3 with a dark brown spot, and C3 dark brown (in C. anchoroides , scape without a short white stripe on ventral apex, F1 with a dark brown spot, F3 and C3 entirely white.) ( Figures 1 View Figure 1 (a) and 5(a,c)); fore wing with basal cell bearing dense short setae (in C. anchoroides , with basal cell bearing relatively sparse short setae.) ( Figures 1 View Figure 1 (b) and 5b); furthermore, the mesonotal tergum and metasomal tergites have evidently different dark or black-brown markings ( Figures 1 View Figure 1 (c), 3(d) and 4(a,d)).
