Perennial herbs, up to 1.5 m high, stems pilose with hispid appressed hairs. Leaves with petiole, 0.5–4 cm long, elliptic or narrow ovate blade, 3–15 × 0.5–2(–4) cm, acute apex, acute attenuate base, short hispid-strigose pubescence uniformly distributed on both surfaces, sometimes sub-glabrous on mature leaves, irregularly serrate margin. Capitula 1–1.8 cm diam., many-flowered, solitary, axillary to superior leaves, peduncle 1–2 cm long. Bracteoles 6–10 mm long, narrow ovate, acuminate, strigose. Calyx 5 mm up to 8 mm in fruit, exterior pilose with some sessile glands, interior glabrous; teeth 2–3.5 mm long, sub-equal, aristate. Corolla white or pink color, 5–10 mm long. Nutlets ovoid, 1–1.5 mm long, dark brown, smooth.
Remarks: — The author of H. cinerea mentioned three specimens (syntypes) in the protologue. A lectotype is here designated following Epling’s choice (in sched.). Morong mentioned three specimens (syntypes) in the protologue of H. cinerea var. stenophylla , a lectotype is here designated among them.
Distribution and habitat: — Hyptis lappacea is a widely distributed species, frequently found in the northern Argentine territory, also present in Bolivia and Paraguay, northern Uruguay and southern Brazil.
