Type (lectotype designated here):— PARAGUAY. Santa Barbara, près de Villa Rica, March 1876, B. Balansa 1000 ( G 307289 !; isolectotypes G 307322 !, K 488413 !, P 737183 !, P 737184 !, P 1817762 !) .
Perennial herbs, up to 1 m high, stems villous. Leaves sessile, reflexed, somewhat appressed to the stem, wide ovate cordate blade, 1–4 × 1–3.5 cm, obtuse occasionally acute apex, obtuse base, dense strigose pubescence on both surfaces, crenate-serrate margin. Capitula 1.5–2(–3) cm diam., many-flowered, solitary, axillary to foliaceous bracts, peduncle 1.5–3.5 cm long. Bracteoles 6–12 mm long, linear, filiform, stiff. Calyx 2.5–4.5 mm, up to 9.5 mm in fruit, exterior sub-glabrous, slightly pilose, interior glabrous; teeth 3.5–4 mm long, sub-equal, aristate. Corolla white or pink, 5.5–6.5 mm long. Nutlets ovoid, 1 mm long, dark brown, smooth.
Remarks:—Two duplicate sheets from the collection Balansa 1000 were found at Herb. G, consequently one of them is here selected as lectotype, following Arts. 8 and 9 of ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012; McNeill 2014).
Distribution and habitat:— Hyptis muelleri is present in southern Brazil, Paraguay, northern Uruguay and northeastern Argentina.
