Description

Head, prothorax, scutellum, and elytra orangish; antennae, ventral body surface and legs dark brown to black; 9–10 antennal segments whitish. Dorsal region with short, dense, orangish pubescence and in ventral region, yellow; punctation fine, dense, and most evident on elytra. Antennae exceeding elytral apices by one segment in males, reaching one-quarter apex of elytra in females. Scape short, cylindrical, slightly shorter than segment 3; segment 3 1.5 times as long as 4; segments 5–7 similar-sized; segments 8–11 gradually shorter. Prothorax elongated, sides with a moderately prominent tubercle posterior to middle. Pronotum subplane, without gibbosities. Elytra about five times as long as prothorax, with two longitudinal carinae. First segment of protarsi one-third longer than second; first segment of mesotarsi 1.5 times as long as the second; first segment of metatarsi 2.0 times as long as the second. Last abdominal segment dorsally exposed.

Etymology. The species epithet “aurantia” (New Latin for “orange”) refers to the colour of the elytra.

Measurements in mm, holotype male/ paratype female. Total length, 11.6–12.4/12.5–12.8; prothorax length, 1.7–2.0/1.4–2.0; prothorax width, 1.4–1.8/1.3–1.8; elytral length, 9.2–9.1/9.2–9.4; humeral width, 2.1–2.2/1.8–2.4.

Type material. Male holotype, Brazil, São Paulo: São José do Barreiro (Serra da Bocaina, 1650 m), November 1968, Alvarenga and Seabra col. (MNRJ). Paratypes, same data as holotype , two males, November 1967 (1600 m) ( MNRJ) ; two males, November 1968 ( MNRJ) ; 14 males, one female, November 1969 ( MNRJ) ; one male, November 1969 ( USNM) ; Rio de Janeiro: Itatiaia (Campo Belo) , one female, 12 October 1957, J. Becker col. ( MNRJ) .

Comments

Cylindrommata aurantia sp. nov. differs from other species by the antennae with segments 9–10 whitish, the prothorax tuberculate at the sides, the pronotum subplane, and the elytra orangish.
