Patellapis (Patellapis) longifacies sp. n. Timmermann

Diagnosis. The females are characterised by the elongate face, which is similar to the females of P. braunsella . The females of both species can be easily distinguished from each other by the surface and punctation of the scutum, which is shiny and sparsely punctate in P. longifacies and dull and densely punctate in P. braunsella . Further, the females of P. longifacies have a unique forewing venation among the Patellapis s.str., namely the small second submarginal cell and the first recurrent vein ending on the second submarginal crossvein (in all other species the 2nd submarginal cell is bigger and the 1st recurrent vein ends before the 2nd recurrent vein). The male of P. longifacies is unknown.

Description

Female. Bl = 6,5mm. General habitus ( Fig. 41e ). Head. L = 2,2mm; W = 2,0mm. Head longer than wide; face elongate ( Fig. 41a ). Integument black except mandibles sometimes partly reddish-brown. Face shiny and with loose, long, greyish, erect hairs. Mandibles bidentate. Malar area very short, linear. Clypeus and supraclypeal area convex in profile. Clypeus moderately strongly and loosely punctate (i = 1,5–2,5d); surface polished. Clypeoantennal distance 0,6mm. Supraclypeal area moderately strongly and sparsely punctate (i = 2,0–3,0d); surface polished. Paraocular area shiny; strongly and moderately densely punctate; surface slightly sculptured. Antennae blackish-brown. Mesosoma. L = 1,4mm; W (ITS) = 1,7mm. Integument black. Scutum polished; disc moderately strongly and densely punctate (i = 1,0–1,5d) ( Fig. 41b ). Scutellum as illustrated in Fig. 41c . Scutum, scutellum, metanotum, mesepisternum and propodeum with greyish, erect hairs. Basal area of propodeum as illustrated in Fig. 41c ; propodeum slightly dull, completely reticulate and with a few, well separated, minute punctures. Marginal region of posterior truncation slightly dull, completely reticulate.

Wings. Hyaline. Legs. Integument mostly brownish. Vestiture mostly greyish. Ts coarsely serrate, with about 8–10 strong, oblique projections ( Fig. 41f ). Bp broad and angulate apically ( Fig. 41g ). Metasoma. L = 4,0mm; W = 2,8mm. Integument blackish-brown except the margins of T brownish to pallid brownish and pallid yellowish; margins extensively translucent. T1–T4 with weak, greyish, apical hair bands; the bands mostly present only laterally. Prepygidial fimbria yellowish to brownish. Discs and marginal zones of T1–T2 as illustrated in Fig. 41d .

SAM – HYM –B009617, SAMC. Etymology. Named after the elongate face. Distribution ( Fig. 43 ). Recorded from few localities in the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape. Floral visitation. Unknown. Seasonal activity (first–last observations). ii–x. Remarks. This species is treated as Patellapis new species 4 in Timmermann and Kuhlmann (2008b).
