Ecological interactions

Conservation status

According to ( Battiston et al. 2010) this species is expected to be experiencing "favourable conditions" for its survival and expansion in the Mediterranean region, accounting for rising temperatures and changes in land use, with spreading of open semi-natural areas in detriment of strictly natural habitats.

Distribution

A chiefly Afrotropical species, widespread south of the Sahara but with more local populations to the north of this barrier around the Mediterranean ( Battiston et al. 2010). For a long time, the only known European populations have been known from southern mainland Spain (chiefly Andalucia) ( Bolivar 1897, Gangwere and Morales Agacino 1970). More recently it has been reported from the Balearic islands ( Canyelles and Alomar 2006), presumably as the result of a human-assisted introduction.
