The record by Randall & Desoutter-Meniger (2007) states “ Gulf of Carpentaria, Qld”, but the QM specimens listed are actually from NT waters (in litt. Jeff Johnson, May 2013) .

We had considerable difficulty distinguishing Randall’s L. polylepis from L. darwinensis , and obtained slightly different counts from our specimens (including the holotypes) than did Randall (2007), despite following his method for counting lateral line scales. We got a range of 98–103 lateral line scales for specimens he identified as L. darwinensis (vs 90-96 in Randall (2007)) and 103–111 for L. polylepis (as per Randall (2007)) and could find no clear differences in morphology, meristics or colour pattern that would warrant separation.

Seven lots from Gulf of Carpentaria, NT, held at QM. Blaber et al.’s record from the Gulf of Carpentaria is a misidentification of this species (Jeff Johnson, in litt., May 2013) .
