Anasida funebris
status

funebris (Anasida) Distant 1900a: 59. [ Fig. 68 View FIGURES 65–72 ]

Original data: “ Hab. Natal (Gueinzius: Brit. Mus .).” [syntype (s)]

LECTOTYPE ♁ (designated by Thomas 1994: 160): blue-margined syntype disc; red-margined type disc; “Pt Natal / 58 13”; “ Anasida funebris Distant [Distant’s handwriting]”; “NHMUK 010592343”. Right antennae, fourth and fifth left antennomeres, and anterior legs missing ( Fig. 68 View FIGURES 65–72 ).

Current status: Anasida funebris Distant, 1900 .

Notes: Thomas (1994: 160) wrote: “Distant’s male type specimen was examined in BM(NH).” We have found a male labeled as type in the collection. Thomas could only have been referring to that specimen (since only one specimen in a type series was ever marked as type, see Assessing type status– Early type labels above).Although Thomas neither described the specimen nor detailed its labels, he distinguished it from other specimens in the box (which, anyway, were all acquired after the date of the original description) by giving its sex and calling it “Distant’s type” (“the type” of Distant); we therefore accept his action as a lectotype designation before 2000 ( ICZN 1999: Art. 74.5). It is likely that Distant described the species from only one specimen as there is only one measurement given in the original description and the mention “remaining joint mutilated”.
