Crotalaria villosa Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 715. 1753.
"Habitat in Aethiopia." RCN: 2943.
Type not designated.
Original material: Herb. Clifford: 357, Crotalaria 3 ( BM); Herb. Clifford: 357, Crotalaria 3 α ( BM); [icon] in Hermann, Hort. Lugd.-Bat. Cat.: 270, 271. 1687; [icon] in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 185, f. 2. 1692; Almag. Bot.: 122. 1696 - Typotype: Herb. Sloane 96: 49 ( BM-SL) - Voucher: Herb. Sloane 100: 89? ( BM-SL).
Current name: Podalyria View in CoL sp. ( Fabaceae : Faboideae ).
Note: The application of this name is uncertain. The Clifford, van Royen, Plukenet and Hermann elements from the protologue all appear in the synonymy of Sophora biflora L. (1759) in the later account in Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 1: 534. 1762. Schelpe (in Veld Fl. 4: 28. 1974) evidently regarded Herb. Clifford: 357, Crotalaria 3 ( BM) (a “fake” with flowers of a Crotalaria species attached to a Podalyria ) as the type of C. villosa , concluding that it could not be synonymous with Sophora biflora L.
