Coryogalops Smith, 1958 View in CoL View at ENA
Coryogalops Smith, 1958: 144 View in CoL (type species: Coryogalops anomolus Smith, 1958 View in CoL by original designation).
Diagnosis. Specimens were assigned to the genus Coryogalops based on the combination of the generic characters adopted by Kovačić et al. (2014) and updated in the present study: 1) head and predorsal area naked (except for C. monospilus with a few rows of predorsal scales); 2) longitudinal scales rows 26-46; 3) upper pectoral-fin rays at least partly free; 4) gill opening restricted, ending ventrally at lower base of pectoral fins; 5) united pelvic fins (fins separated in C. anomolus only); 6) cephalic sensory systems with separate anterior and posterior oculoscapular canals with pores σ, λ, κ, ω, α, β, ρ and ρ1, ρ2, respectively, and preopercular canal with pores γ, δ, ε; 7) suborbital papillae pattern transverse, with six or seven suborbital rows (except for Coryogalops bulejiensis (Hoda, 1983) that possesses five suborbital transverse rows (Goren, 1985)); 8) transverse suborbital row of sensory papillae 4 beginning close to eye, at level of upper half of papilla of row 5 ( Miller, 1978; Goren, 1985; Randall, 1994; Kovačić et al., 2014, and the present description).
The monotypic Mediterranean genus Zebrus De Buen, 1930 fit the Coryogalops generic diagnosis given by Kovačić et al. (2014), but a single species Zebrus zebrus (Risso, 1826) easily differs from all Coryogalops species, including new species Coryogalops nanus sp. nov., by morphological characters ( Miller, 1977). Anyway, the additional unique character (number 8 in Diagnosis) is added to Coryogalops diagnosis to distinguish the genus from Mediterranean genus Zebrus : transverse suborbital row of sensory papillae 4 beginning distant from eye in Z. zebrus , i.e. at the level of lower half of row 5 ( Miller, 1977).
