Edwardsia View in CoL de Quatrefages, 1842
Edwardsiidae with body divisible into physa, scapus, and capitulum; physa short, ampullaceous, without nemathybomes or periderm. Scapus long, with nemathybomes. At least 12 tentacles in adults; inner ones shorter than outer ones. Eight fertile, filamentbearing perfect mesenteries. Retractors relatively large, welldeveloped, diffuse to reniform; parietal muscles distinct, symmetrical, well developed. Cnidom: spirocysts, basitrichs, microbasic b , p , and t mastigophores, pterotrichs.
Type species. Edwardsia beautempsii de Quatrefages, 1842 by subsequent designation ( Carlgren 1949; Fautin 2007; Fautin et al. 2007). Carlgren (1949), following other authors (e.g., Fisher 1887, Delphy 1938) gave the species epithet as “ beautempsi .”
Remarks. Not all types of cnidae are known from all species of the genus (see discussion).
