Type Locality: " Jamaica " restricted by King (1956) to "Pedro Cays, 80 km. south of Jamaica ".
Vernacular Names: Caribbean Monk Seal.
Synonyms: Monachus antillarum (J. E. Gray 1849) .
Distribution: Historical records include coastal regions of the Caribbean Sea and Yucatan: Mexico (Veracruz to Yucatan), Bahamas, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, USA (Florida).
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Extinct.
Discussion: Extinct since 1952 ( Kenyon, 1977; Rice, 1998).
