Between Zanderij and the Cola Creek. Dry open white sand savanna, 27 Jan 1961, Kramer & Hekking 2778 (holotype AAU; isotypes BBS?, K, U [U-0111332], UC, US [00650502]). Fig. 15A View FIGURE 15 .
Lycopodium duidae A.C. Sm. var. guianense K.U.Kramer, Proc. Koninkl. Nederl.Akad. Wet.Amsterdam Ser. C View in CoL , 71(5): 520. 1968. Type :— SURINAME: Kappel savanna near Tafelberg, Kramer & Hekking 3040 (holotype U p.p. [U-0007453]; isotype NY [143976]). Note: The protologue indicates Kramer & Hekking 3030 as the type, apparently a misprint.
Plants with horizontal shoots closely appressed to the ground, at least to 20 cm long, rooted with short intervals, sparsely to densely branching in the horizontal plane, bearing stiffly erect, dorsally arising, simple, at least to 28 cm tall strobiliferous branches. Horizontal shoots densely covered on all sides by leaves, 5–8 mm in diam. incl. leaves. Stems excl. leaves 2–3 mm thick, sometimes with a somewhat spongy and swollen cortex. Leaves of horizontal shoots uniform laterally and dorsally, the ventral ones pale, flaccid and reduced to nearly filiform, upwardly secund and curved. Dorsal and lateral leaves acicular, quadrangular (dried) with a widened (subconical), long decurrent, slightly acroscopically adnate leaf base, 4–8 mm long, 0.5–0.8 mm wide at the base, with smooth margins. Erect strobiliferous shoots 3–5 mm in diam. incl leaves, 1–1.8 mm excl. leaves, with uniform, radially arranged leaves. Vegetative leaves of erect shoots borne in alternating, irregular whorls of 4–6, these 1.5–3 mm apart, forming 8–12 obscure longitudinal ranks, uniformly falcately upward curved from a sligthly to strongly diverging base throughout, flattened with a pronounced median ridge, linear-lanceolate to subulate with a long narrow tip, 3–5(–7) × 0.7–1 mm, leaf base long and broadly decurrent, and slightly acroscopically adnate. Strobili at least to 9 cm long, 8–12 mm in diam. with distended sporophylls. Sporophylls borne in alternating whorls of 5–6, forming 10–12 longitudinal ranks, subpeltate, with a basiscopic, compressed membranaceous wing on the stalk, the exterior face with an ovate to rhombic basal part and a long evenly tapering apex, 5–8 × 1.5–2 mm, with smooth to finely erose-dentate margins. Sporangia borne on the sporophyll base, reniform, isovalvate, 1–1.5 mm wide.
Distribution:— Endemic to the Guianas ( Guyana and Suriname).
Habitat:— Moist white sand savannas with scanty herbaceous vegetation in full sun, 300–2300 m.
Specimens examined:— GUYANA: Upper Mazaruni Distr., N slope of Mt. Roraima , Renz et al. 14252 (U) .— SURINAME: South savannas, Arawak village , Mata, Maguire & Stahel 24981 (A) ; Distr. Saramacca, Tafelberg, Kappel-savanna near the southern foot, 300 m, Kramer & Hekking 3040 (U p.p., US p.p.) ; Vicinity of Zanderij, near Matta , 45–50 km S of Paramaribo, Mori & Bolten 8345 ( NY, U, US) ; Savanna 15 km W of Zanderij I, Jansma 47 (U). Zanderij savanna near Troeli, Jansma 15683 ( BBS, U) .
Note: — Pseudolycopodiella krameriana appears intermediate in several features between P. iuliformis , P. tatei , and P. contexta , i.e. shape and direction of the leaves of the peduncular branch, and thickness relation of strobilus to the peduncular shoot. Pseudolycopodiella krameriana was found growing together with P. tatei .
