Notes on Gyrinus unidentatus Dejean, 1821 and Dineutus unidentatus Aubé, 1838
The name Gyrinus unidentatus was given first by Dejean (1821: 20) as a nomen nudum with patria " Brasilia ". Later (Dejean 1833: 58) the same taxon was listed in genus Cyclous Dejean, 1833 . Aubé (1838a: 788) made the name available, but placed it in the genus Dineutus W.S. Macleay, 1825 (misspelled as Dineutes ) and still with patria " Brasilia ". White (1847: 49) gave it as Dineutes with locality "E. Indies" (more or less meaning the Indian subcontinent). To our knowledge, Schaum (1847: 54) was the first who explicitly called Dejean's and Aubé's " Brasilia " an incorrect record. The species is widely distributed in the Oriental Region and in Hainan ( China) (Mazzoldi 1995) and does not belong to the Brazilian fauna. This is why it was not included in Colpani et al. (2014).
