Type Locality: "Habitat ad ripas Gangis; in Iana, Ceylona"; restricted to India, Bihar, banks of the Ganges River ( Ellerman and Morrison-Scott, 1951:360).

Vernacular Names: Chital.

Distribution: India (incl. Sikkim), Nepal, and Sri Lanka; introduced to Andaman Isls, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Brazil, Croatia, Moldavia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Ukraine, Uruguay, and USA (Florida, Hawaiian Isls, and Texas).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
