scientific name

Mirabilis jalapa L.
status

Mirabilis jalapa Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 1: 177. 1753.

“Habitat in India utraque.” RCN: 1400.

Lectotype (Larsen in Morat, Fl. Cambodge Laos Viêtnam 24: 108. 1989): Herb. Linn. No. 240.2 (LINN).

Generitype of Mirabilis Linnaeus.

Current name: Mirabilis jalapa L. ( Nyctaginaceae ).

Note: Kellogg (in Howard, Fl. Lesser Antilles 4: 181. 1988) indicated unseen material in the Clifford herbarium (BM) as “type”. However, as there are two sheets associated with this name, which are not part of a single gathering, this is not an effective choice and Art. 9.15 does not apply. Although Le Duc (in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 67. 1993) accepted a single Clifford sheet (BM) as lectotype, Larsen had, in the meantime, designated a sheet in LINN as type and this appears to be the earliest explicit choice.
