Harpirhynchus brevis Ewing, 1911: 38 ; Fain 1995: 99 (type lost). Harpyrhynchus brevis, Moss 1979: 381 .

Hosts and distribution. Coccothraustes vespertinus (Cooper) View in CoL [type host] and Loxia curvirostra Linnaeus View in CoL ( Passeriformes View in CoL : Fringillidae View in CoL ) from USA (various localities) (Ewing 1911; Moss 1979; Bochkov & Klompen 2014b).

Remarks. Banks (1905a) described Harpirhynchus longipilus Banks, 1905 (= Sarcopterus longipilis Banks, 1905b ) from Loxia sp. ( Passeriformes : Fringillidae ) from Washington, USA. The only species of the genus Loxia occurring in Washington is Loxia curvirostra ( Clements et al. 2014) . The original description of this species is incomplete and does not allow differentiating this species confidently from other representatives of the genus ( Fain 1995). The record of H. brevis from Loxia curvirostra makes the conspecificity of these two species highly probable and, thus, H. brevis could be a junior synonym of H. longipilus . It is necessary, however, to obtain a new material from Loxia curvirostra from the locality to resolve this question.

The record of this species on Agelaius phoeniceus (Linnaeus) ( Passeriformes : Icteridae ) from USA ( Morly & Shillinger 1937) should been assigned to Harpyrhynchoides zumpti ( Fain, 1972) ( Bochkov & Klompen 2014b). A record of this species from Catharus fuscescens (Stephens) ( Passeriformes : Turdidae ) from USA ( Morley & Shillinger 1937), probably belongs to H. zumpti or Harpyrhynchoides heatherae Bochkov and Galloway, 2013 .
