Harpyrhynchoides pluvialis Bochkov , OConnor and Klompen sp. nov.
( Figs. 16 View FIGURE 16 , 17 View FIGURE 17 F–H)
Description. FEMALE (holotype). Body, including gnathosoma, 325 long and 285 wide. Length and width of gnathosoma subequal, about 100. Palp 50 long and 30 wide, without lateral notches. Palpalae strongly different in shape ( Fig. 17 View FIGURE 17 F): dG 12 long, with 5–7 pectinations, 2.5 times thicker than very narrow dF 37 long and l”G 30 long. Setae vF 65 long, smooth. Subcapitulum ventrally without membranous projections. Peritrematal branch 35 long. Idiosoma 240 long. Smooth cuticle between peritrematal branches and transverse striations apunctate. All dorsal setae slightly serrate. Dorsal shield unornamented, 165 long and 235 wide, roughly octagonal; anterior margin slightly concave, posterior margin deeply concave. Idiosoma ventrally without scales or verrucosities, almost fully striated. Setae 1a situated slightly posterior to level of setal bases 1c. Setae 3a situated at level of coxal fields III. Distance between setal bases 3a 3 times longer than between setal bases 1a. Ventral setae h1 present.
Distances h1–h1 and h2–h2 subequal. Coxal fields I and II with transverse membranous fold. Vulvar pocket-like structure without long lateral longitudinal folds. Vulvar apodemes discernible. Setae vi, ve, si, se, and c2 100–115 long—all serrate, h1 and h about 12. Solenidia ω 1 I and ω 1 II about 11 long, narrow straight and conical, with rounded apex. Empodium of tarsi I and II not elongated, only slightly longer or subequal to respective tarsus. Genua I and II with 3 setae (d, l’, v’), femora I and II with 2 setae (d and v), trochanters I and II with 1 seta (v). Apical segment of leg III with 5 setae; preapical segment with 2 setae. Leg IV with 2 segments; preapical segment with 1 seta; apical segment with 4 setae.
Type deposition. Holotype in OSAL.
Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from the generic name of the host and is a noun in apposition.
Hosts and distribution. Pluvialis dominica ( Charadriiformes : Charadriidae ) from USA (Ohio) (present paper).
Differential diagnosis. Among species of the group capellae , female of the new species (male absent) is closest to Harpyrhynchoides actitis and H. phalaropus Bochkov and Galloway, 2013 by setae dG being almost twice as wide as dF. It differs from these species by the following features. In females of H. pluvialis sp. nov., setae l”G are about 2.5 times longer than dG (vs. 1.7–2 times longer in H. actitis and H. phalaropus ), setae dF are three times longer than dG (vs. subequal in H. actitis and 1.5 times shorter in H. phalaropus ), the idiosoma ventrally is almost fully striated (vs. striated anterior to level of seta 1a bases and at level of setal bases 3a to the pocket-like vulvar structure in H. actitis , and without striations between levels of setal bases 3a and pocket-like vulvar structure in H. phalaropus ), and the body length is 325 (vs. 260–280 long in H. actitis and 220–240 in H. phalaropus ).
