Tropidopedia guaranae View in CoL sp. n.
( Figs. 1–18 View FIGURES 1 – 4 View FIGURES 5 – 13 View FIGURES 14 – 18 )
Comments and diagnosis. Tropidopedia guaranae sp. n. is quite similar to T. nigrita , but the former can be differentiated from the latter species by the lateral margins of clypeus and the lower paraocular areas, which have a large pale-yellow spot, and by the basal area of propodeum, which is smooth, polished, and glabrous. Tropidopedia guaranae sp. n. is the only black species of Tropidopedia in which the lateral portions of the pronotal collar are only slightly raised. Male sterna and genitalia as in Figs. 5–13 View FIGURES 5 – 13 .
Description. Holotype male: Body length 7.2; forewing length 6.4; maximum head width 2.5; head about 1.2 times broader than long (2.5: 2.1); proportion between lower and upper interocullar distances 0.8 (1.2: 1.4); clypeus 1.4 times broader than long (1.1: 0.8); scape length 0.6, maximum width 0.2; length of F1–F3, 0.2, 0.1, 0.2; F2 diameter 0.2; maximum T2 width 2.7.
Color: Integument mostly black. Mandible pale yellow with apex brownish; labrum and lateral margin of clypeus pale yellow; lower paraocular area with a large pale-yellow spot; lower half of outer paraocular area with pale yellow stripe. Scape with anterior surface yellowish; pedicel and flagellomeres brownish. Legs brownish; apical margins of fore and mesobasitarsus, all metabasitarsi, apical margin of metatibia and tarsomeres 2–4 yellowish; tibial spurs pale yellow. Wing membrane yellow infumated, black infumated in apical margin; veins mostly honey colored, pterostigma yellow with dense black microtrichiae; veins C and R brownish. Metasomal terga black to brownish.
Pubescence: Paraocular area mostly glabrous; area between epistomal sulcus and antennal socket and surrounding antennal socket with dense, short, pale plumose hairs intermingled with few simple setae. Front and vertex with long, simple brownish setae, dense, shorter and plumose on preoccipital carina. Gena with long, pale setae, longer on lower third. Lower margin of mandible with dense, plumose yellowish hairs. Scape with simple yellow setae. Mesoscutum with very short, plumose brownish hairs intermingled with few, large, simple setae on central disc. Scutellum with dense, plumose, brownish pubescence intermingled with few, erect, longer simple setae. Mesepisternum covered with pale, long setae. Basal area of propodeum glabrous. Lateral areas of T1–T3 each with short marginal band of hairs, longer on T1; T4 with few scattered setae; T5 with premarginal sinuous line of setae; T6 covered with brownish, erect, simple setae, median apical margin with dense, plumose hairs. S2 with triangular tuft of simple white hairs intermingled with few branched setae on median apical margin (c. 0.2–mm long), with narrow, hairless line medially; apical margin of S3 with long, simple hairs laterally, with few thickened, curved setae delimiting large glabrous area medially; S4 with dense, long, plumose decumbent hairs on margin, lateral portion with long fringes converging to the centre; S5 with long, branched setae on margin, sparse, shorter medially; S6 with sparse, short, simple hairs on lateral area, broadly separated from each other medially, and dense combs on lateral margin of apical portion. Leg pubescence mostly brownish; hind leg with yellow hairs on apex of tibia and basitarsus.
Integumental surface: Clypeus and supraclypeal area with dense, coarse punctures (0.5–1 pd). Frons with dense, fine punctures on central disc (0.5–1 pd); frons with short midline narrowly sulcated between antennal sockets; paraocular area smooth; mesepisterna mostly smooth, with sparse, fine punctures (> 2 pd); scutellum with dense, fine punctures intermingled with sparse, coarse punctures on central disc. Basal area of propodeum and tergal surface smooth and polished.
Structure: F1 almost as long as its apical diameter. Lateral portion of postocellar carina ending gradually. Supraclypeal area with conspicuous transverse carina immediately above epistomal suture ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Pronotal collar with lateral portion only slightly raised. Mesepisternum with anterior margin depressed, forming weak carina on omaular area. Scutellum convex with two conspicuous concavities on posterior margin.
Female: Body length 8.3; forewing length 6.5; maximum head width 2.5; head about 1.2 times broader than long (2.5: 2.1); proportion between lower and upper interocullar distances 0.9 (1.2: 1.3); clypeus 1.4 times broader than long (1.1: 0.8); scape length 0.6, maximum width 0.2; length of F1–F3, 0.2, 0.1, 0.2; F2 diameter 0.2; maximum T2 width 2.6.
Color: As in male ( Figs. 14–18 View FIGURES 14 – 18 ).
Pubescence: As in male except as follows: basal labial palpomere with few, long setae restricted to apex. Margins of basitibial plate almost glabrous. T5 with premarginal fringe of long, branched setae, broadly separated from apical fringe of branched setae; T6 with complete band.
Integumental surface: Similar to male except as follows: coarse punctures on central disc of scutellum, sparser than in male.
Structure: Supraclypeal area with weak transverse carina. Pygidial plate with lateral margin of the basal portion carinate and its apical portion 1.9 times longer than wide ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 14 – 18 ).

ALLOTYPE. ♀, same as Holotype except, 23.xi.2012 // #1579 // Lote: 1889 // ALLOTYPE ♀ Tropidopedia guaranae Mahlmann & Oliveira, 2015 . PARATYPE. ♀, same as Allotype except, #1578. All specimens are in excellent conditions and are deposited in INPA.
Distribution. Brazil: Amazonas.
Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the name of the amazon fruit guarana ( Paullinia cupana Kunth : Sapindaceae ), given that specimens were collected in a guarana orchard.
